Default Day of the Dead.

So I am a fan of zombie movies.
And while at Borders today.
I picked up Day of the Dead.
However I had intended to grab Dawn of the Dead.
But I thought it seemed wrong but was in a bit of a hurry so did not really think about it till I got home and pulled up the blu-ray.com review of this movie.
Should I return this for the movie I had originally intended to get, or should I just keep it and get the other one as well?

Ooooor should I throw out all my blurays and get me some hddvds?

It depends what you want. Dawn of the Dead has a smart script and likeable characters. Day has no real likeable charaters so it's a little harder to warm up to. If you like gore Day is the way to go. I think they're both worth owning. They both look better on Blu than they ever have before.

Yeah I know George A. Romero is pretty much the father of the zombie genre.
And my friend and I are in the midst of making a zombie film of our own so I have been trying to view the best the genre has to offer.
I think I will end up keeping it.

Any other really good zombie films anyone can recommend?

Lucio Fulchi's Zombie is the best non-Romero I can think of (zombie vs shark!)
Tombs of the Blind Dead is great too.

I am not sure if they are considered "zombie" movies but 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later were both great movies in my opinion

If you're a zombie fan, Romero's Day Of The Dead is a must have.

Since you're making a zombie movie, I'd say your a fan; therefore keep the movie. Yes, it's not as ground breaking as Dawn of the Dead, but Day still has it's moments.

There are plenty of Italian zombie movies that are good.

Lucio Fulci (ZOMBI 2)
City of the Living Dead

also, try Cemetery man if you haven't...(of course none of these are on blu )

I would read up on the production strategy of 28 Days Later. There is a ton of Troma stuff you could watch for cheap gore ideas.

Many will argue that Day of the Dead was crap compared to the rest of Romero's work but I really enjoyed this movie as equally as I enjoyed Dawn and Night of Living Dead.

Exactly! And besides Day will grow on you. I remember hating it at first, but came to appreciate Romero's vision later on. I wish he had the budget to do the original screenplay he wrote.

Another great zombie gorefest is Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive". Also "Return of the Living Dead" is a great one. Not affiliated with Romeros films but they do have some great nods to his stuff and tie it in a little.

DAY is the best of the series, even though it is the most downbeat. Some of the dialog in it is phenomenal ("maybe he thought we was getting too big for our britches...") and the gore is outstanding. DAWN may be the most popular, but DAY is a true fan (and Romero's) fave.

Default Must own Zombie film

Just finished this film and nearly the entire jaw dropping "extras" and am simply amazed at the product quality of this film.

I put this film in the top 5 and perhaps THE best Zombie film I have ever seen.

The BluRay PQ may not be reference but, it is pretty solid and the gore and details are in your face.
You can almost smell the rotting Zombies.

The 3rd in the Dead Trilogy, Romero made a masterful film that will stand the test of time forever.

If you enjoy Zombie flicks...it's a must own.
Movie 5/5
PQ 4/5
AQ 4/5
Extras 5/5

[Show spoiler]
Simply THE best or certainly top 5 Zombie movie ever done, by THE master of the genre....George Romero.
This film and "Zombi 2", by Lucio Fulci are probably my 2 favorite Zombi movies ever, ever.

The script is engrossing and filled with emotion, the plot is solid with a nice flow of events, the cast is perfect, the makeup and effects are superb and the horror factor here is more than you may bargain for.

To think this movie was made on a $3.5 million budget (1985 dollars) is mind boggling and there must have been many people working for free imo.
The 3rd in the 'Dead Trilogy', this one sets the world affairs at it's most bleak and darkest with no hope for remaining humanity albeit, a mad doctor is experimenting on the creatures trying to 'make them behave for reward'.
As any great horror movie would have, the entire experiment blows up in there faces with limb crunching, skull separating results.

The humans are hair trigger amongst themselves with treachery and hate brewing from get go, and no need to add to the assumed goal of the hoard of flesh eating Zombies...to rip apart every living being left standing, and between those two walls lies the chasm of potential implosion which surely comes.
We are talking about Romero here.

A must own for any alleged Zombie fan.

Bravisimo.
