United Kingdom I, Monster (Indicator Aug. 31, 2020)

Preordered this Region B Blu ray of the 1971 Christopher Lee-Peter Cushing Amicus film, apparently there will only be 3000 copies pressed. I've had the awful cheapo DVD for years and look forward to the upgrade.

Curious as to why there 2 2 cuts of the film included, not a title I associate with variants.

Agreed, curious. I couldn't find the film on that BBFC & the various cuts site either. Nice it has a wealth of extras though. With the worldwide Lee & Cushing fans, shouldn't be too hard to move 3000 copies.

We've had the longer version as default for a while now. Same with Torture Garden, The Damned, Cash on Demand etc. but Indicator still included the shorter versions as a curio. It's part of their appeal. Many wouldn't bother, but they do.

There's no good reason not to. Seamless branching means that in this instance it takes up literally no extra disc space (the same was true of Torture Garden), and we think it's important to present films in their original theatrical versions whenever possible, if only to illustrate what contemporary audiences and critics would have seen.

The editor of Age of Consent complained to Sight & Sound about us including both cuts of that film, but the fact is that nobody outside Australia saw his preferred version until the Scorsese-backed restoration some fifteen years ago - so pretty much everyone writing about the film before then would have been writing about the studio recut with its completely different opening titles and score. And if a director favours one particular version over another, we make this clear - including situations like Satan's Slave, where Norman J. Warren actually prefers the milder cut.

(Although not the original BBFC-butchered cut - we did consider including that in full, but decided that that would be overkill, although one of the extras reconstructs all the original censored sequences, so the disc still serves the same scholarly purpose.)

Pre-ordered & paid for two copies in June, received the dispatch notification a few days ago but today only received one copy, anyone know if they are sending these out packaged individually? Cheers.

Delighted for this release and have finally had a chance to see a quality transfer. I saw it once in a butchered print on the ABC 3:30 movie in the USA, and then on a crummy unwatchable DVD I picked up. Excellent Cushing and Lee pairing that's up there with the very best of Hammer's 70's output or beyond with Lee's performance.

Watched Indicator's release of I, Monster last night for the first time and loved it. If you're a fan of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, this is a must-own release. If you're in the U.S. like me, you'll need a Region Free player, as this is Region B-locked.

It's fantastic.

I blind bought the Blu Ray and was shocked to find a film that stands shoulder to shoulder with Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, etc.

Agreed, this is easily up there with Hammer's best releases of the period if not beyond, since outside of the two late Dracula's, none had the great pairing of Cushing AND Lee!

I, Monster is an excellent film. Lee and Cushing did, however, also pair in Horror Express (1972), The Creeping Flesh ('73), and Nothing But the Night ('73). None of these are Hammer Films, of course, but that legendary pairing is still there.

As far as I'm aware, only Horror Express is available on Blu-Ray in the UK (Arrow Video).

Playing this on my Panasonic 820. All of the commentary tracks play perfectly, but the main feature audio is silent - anyone got an idea?
