Default newbie needs help...

hi guys,
i recently got a new tv, and i have the oppurtunity to pick up a blu ray player for a great price. i'm not sure if it is worth it or not, because i don't know if my tv is 'full hd' or not... im very new to all of this and find it all a bit confusing, and i was wondering if somebody could help me out...

my tv model is: hitachi 42PD7300TA 42" plasma... it does say HDMI on there. here is a link to the manual and specs:

http://www.hitachi.com.au/Admin/Uplo...25915f5573.pdf

hope somebody can help me!

thanks for the quick replies!

so do you think it would be worth upgrading though? because its not full hd, do you think there will be a noticable difference between standard dvd and blu ray on this tv?

i heard about blu ray being the next generation of home video and what not so i thought i'd give it a go... honestly i dont watch that many dvds, but i expected the difference to be really big between std. def, so i considered it a worthy upgrade. but after learning i wont be getting the 'full hd experience' i'm a bit unsure.

I think that decision is really up to you. I love movies and I watch them several times. I have samsung 1080i Tv and a PS3 and I can tell you my experience with Blu ray. The first time I watched a blu ray movie I thought "i don't see that much of a difference". But now, having watched several movies and documentaries on BD I can tell you that there really is a difference. Everytime I watch a DVD now I get the feeling the image is blurry

I have an older LCD proj. TV that is 1080i - it has a DVI connector - which in most newer models has been ditched for HDMI, but is still compatible w/the HD video portion of an HDMI signal - so w/an adapter I can still use the HDMI outs of my PS3. Let me tell you , it's WORTH IT. some older favorites look like completely new movies - examples I like to use are Blazing Saddles and Close Encounters - and newer films just look phenomenal (kingdom of heaven). So as someone who has a similar-quality TV as yours, yeah I'd say it's worth it. Oh, and you mentioned Standard DVDs - even w/ your set you don't have to try very hard to notice an improved PQ from standard DVDs, as long as the BR player you're looking at does Upconversion for standard DVDs. (just get a PS3 it does all that stuff )

My magnavox is only 1080i. When i hooked up the PS3 to it and played my first blu ray, i was amazed at the picture. My wife said she didnt see much difference at first, but now, she only wants to buy blu discs........lol.
Definately worth the investment in my opinion.

+1 to everything that Matt X said.

In addition, I believe the consensus is that to be able to visually tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, the screen size should (empirically) exceed 55". Therefore, at 42" your Hitachi should work just great.

My $0.02.

Rup.

Look. get the bd player. If you are sitting more than 7 ft away from the tv, than the human eye can't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p (720p does 1080i). So the bd's won't look any worse whether you have true hd or not.

Before you get the Blu-ray player, check if it's Profile 1.1 or Profile 1.0. The basic difference is that Profile 1.1 machines will display picture in picture. Most, if not all, Blu-ray players up until October 31, 2007 have been Profile 1.0 and have lacked the secondary video and audio decoders necessary to play a smaller video in the corner while also playing the main high-def movie in the background. (P-in-P may not be important to you; it is not a significant issue to me.)

Newer machines distributed after November 1st should be Profile 1.1. For more information check out the following: http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9808376-1.html

Good luck in your BLU endeavors!
