Default Somebody's going to have to explain this to me...

What does it mean when a director owns the rights to his own movie? I've heard talk that Spielberg and Lucas are two of those and they're the two I'd expect. But what I don't underdstand is if Spielberg loves Blu so much, is it coincidence that his first hi-def release just happens to be distributed by Sony Pictures? Why not just slap Universal in the face and release JP?

Most directors do not have "Final Cut" clause. Speilberg does. He probably has the clause where the studios need his or his estate's green light before they can release his movies in any particular format or in any country.

Spielberg doesn't own his movies but his contracts covers him for this. However Lucas owns anything past Ep4 that was produced by Lucasfilm so he has final say. That's why Paramount screwing with Spielberg is not a good idea.
