Default Sony Str-dg910 and onkyo sks-ht540 compatability

Hey all,

I've been a long time reader, but this is my first post. I got my apartment and I am setting up my movie experience. My Sharp Aquos 46" LCD arrives today and waiting for it is my new Sony str-dg910 and Onkyo sks-ht540 speaker system. After taking advice from members and going to monoprice.com for my 12awg speaker wire, I now have to go to get banana plugs....other than that my 60 gb ps3 is waiting to unleash its full power...but I have one question:

Is my Sony receiver and Onkyo speaker system compatible (wattage/power wise)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I can't wait to get Superman Returns and the Departed in the mail after the BOGO at Amazon yesterday. Thanks!

Ok, another quick question.

I was watching Black Hawk Down on my system and before a really big scene, my receiver would cut out the sound and it would flash "PROTECT" on it. THen the receiver would turn off, which then turned off the TV. Any ideas of how to fix this? I have banana plugs all set up...is it the connection of the banana plugs? Is it my HDMI cable? Is my volume on too high?

Also, if anyone has this Sony receiver, do you know what the max volume is (the number, exactly) Thank you

check and be sure you connected the speakers correctly...positive to positive, negative to negative.

That will send it into protect mode...and I bet is your problem.

They are connected correctly because my sounds works when I watch HD cable...it only goes to PROTECT when a really loud scene goes on. I think I fixed it last night by jiggling my old HDMI cable and I turned the volume down a little, but I shouldn't have to keep on monitoring the volume, right?

...i'd double check. You would still get sound but when higher current (turning volume up) is applied its going to shut off.

underdog,

I didn't put the volume over 50. Since you have the same AVR, do you know what the max volume number is? (just so I don't completely ruin my AVR). I am getting a new HDMI cable from monoprice today, so hopefully that will do it. I readjusted the output HDMI from my AVR to TV.

Any tips on customizing the receiver that you've noticed? Thanks and Thank you Crackinheadz for your help, too!

pg.96 of user Manual (Troubleshooting):

PROTECT

"Irregular current is output from the speakers. The Receiver will automatically turn off after a few seconds. Check the speaker connection and turn on the power again."

Well, i ran the Auto Cal. tool, and have fiddled with the menus but nothing of importance there. I send PCM to it from my PS3. What is your source? Have you had electricity problems (power failures, surges etc) ?

Thank you Crackinheadz for finding that...The manual that comes with it is not very good.

I have my PS3 connected to the Sony via HDMI and then output to my Sharp Aquos LCD via HDMI as well. I have a above average surge protector from Target, but maybe I should get one of those heavy duty Belkins? Advice? Thanks.
