I currently run my PS3 over component to my projector and HDMI to my LCD. Im very pleased with the picture over component (my projector runs at 720p) but wonder if changing to HDMI will improve the image at all? The only problem I have is the cable is going to need to be 7 meters long which will be expensive. Also due to my projectors age about 3 years old im sure its only going to be HDMI 1.1 compliant.
Before I shell out does anyone think its worth the money or will the difference in picture quality be small ![]() |

Honestly, if you can borrow a cable, try it first.
I have issues between my PS3 and my LG 50" plasma via HDMI. I can tell the picture WOULD look a bit better through HDMI, but the screen jumps up and down every few seconds, kind of like there's interference or something. The jumping is about 24% opaque, so I don't see it unless I'm with 7 feet of the TV. It only happens around bright areas. Due to this, I purchased the component cables, and they work fine. I sit far enough back from my TV that I just run HDMI these days, but it still bugs me knowing that the jumping is there on bright text.. even if I don't see it sitting so far away. I get deeper blacks through HDMI, and colors pop a little more. Otherwise, component works better. The other big exception is that my TV handles banding much better through component. Unless I tweak my setting just right through HDMI, I see more banding. I think it all depends on your TV/projector, and how it works with the PS3's HDMI. |

It also sort of depends on the component setup you are using. Are you using a short PS3 breakout cable to a longer set of components, with male to male adapters in between? Because I haven't seen too many 7 meter PS3 cables.
If so, that would degrade your picture a slight bit. Component can look quite pretty close to HDMI, depending on what your plugging it into. But I'd bet in your setup you will see an improvement. If you can get a decent HDMI cable for under 30-40 pounds (and you should be able to), it is almost certainly worth it. BB |

My setup goes PS3 component to my amp then from my amp its a long component run to the projector. The amp allows component switching which I use for my DVD player, sky, Xbox ect. HDMI cable will run straight from the PS3 to the projector (about 7 meters)

At 720p I don't think you'll notice any difference at all. Good quality shielded component cables should give you the same picture through your projector as HDMI.
HDMI's whole purpose is for 1080p, and to carry uncompressed audio. I'm guessing you don't run audio to your projector, and you don't need 1080p... so component cables should be just fine. The only issue is HDMI is a pure digital cable. When using component cables the player switches it to analog to travel the cables, then the projector recombines it digitaly before displaying it. This back and forth may cause some unwanted artifacts depending on the quality of the projector. However, if the projector is of good quality, and the cables are shielded, any difference would be minimal. I say stick with component, but I've been wrong before. ( ...and recently) |
