Default PS3 or Onkyo Decoding question...

Good morning all once more. Hope the beginning of your week is a good one. I was wondering the following:

Is it better to have the PS3 decode the higher res audio and send it to my Onkyo 705 as PCM or should I send the audio as a bitstream and let the Onkyo receiver decode it??

As usual, all opinions are appreciated..

Peace all....

PS3 cannot bitstream, check the search function on the forums.

With the new formats it's recommended to have the player decode them internally and send them to the receiver via bitsream -- why? The player adds/mixes various audio channels or player sound effects as needed, either just to hear the "click" as you select a menu item or for more advanced functions/extra features. If you bitsream your audio in its native format for decoding by your receiver you will only get the film's audio track (not that that's a bad thing).

What I bolded is a contradiction in terms.
You either send audio bistream or decoded as PCM. Once it is decoded it is no longer a bitstream.

Ane when you say recommended by whom?
Would not be by me the receiver does a better job decoding the audio in all the tests I have done. Now I understand once the PiP come into play if you want that to be done at the sametime as the feature you would need it done in the player. But even then I would not recommend it unless it was a second watching to see the secondary stuff.

But all this does not help the op since with a PS3 your only option is to have the player decode and send PCM.
