Jake Gyllenhaal did a really good Q&A session on Reddit earlier that talks about this a little:
http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comment...yllenhaal_ama/ I didn't know he witnessed a murder when going on a ride along in preparation for End of Watch. Yikes. |

These comparisons to Drive have me mystified. The only literal comparisons are that it's a) set in LA, and b) it involves driving.
Really enjoyed the film - not best-of-the-year but definitely in my top 20. Gyllenhaal, of course, carried the entire film - but there were some great bit-parts from Riz Ahmed, Bill Paxton and Rene Russo. I'd say that if you enjoyed Gone Girl or The Wolf Of Wall Street earlier this year, you'll take something away from this (assuming you understood both of those films). Fans of some or all of these films will certainly enjoy it (thought it was a pretty spot-on list...I would personally add American Psycho to it as well): http://thefilmstage.com/features/10-...-nightcrawler/ |

It is vaguely like Taxi Driver but only in its nihilism really. |

Definitely! Some comparisons to be made to both that (fast-speaking, estranged loser deludedly seeking fame and success) and Scorsese's later Bringing Out The Dead (although Cage's character in that had a definite conscience about what he was doing, but the frenzy is similar).

I instantly thought of Drive when I saw the trailers because of the cinematography, setting, and obviously all the driving. The film itself though has a different tone than the cool, stylish trailers.
Also, I had no idea that Riz Ahmed was the lead in Four Lions! He and Rene Russo are also fantastic. |
