Default things HD-DVD fanboys are afraid of...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=NlOGSl13O1k

the sales numbers, BD continues to grow, we slowed for a bit when Paramount got that $150 million, but BD hit 73:27 last week http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/ques...0207/index.php, and I'm expecting that growth to continue, 6.5 million PS3's can't be wrong http://www.vgchartz.com/.

the argument the HD-DVD fanboy make that the PS3 isn't "standalone" let's ignore that when they define standalone they describe the word dedicated quite well, the PS3 is a gaming console as well, and they'll increase sales on 2 fronts for the PS3 1. as a BD player, and 2. as a gaming console. Even if we go with the 20% figure that some HD-DVD fanboys give to show usage of the PS3 as a BD player, that'll vastly increase BD over HD-DVD as when you buy a HD-DVD player, it's only a video playback device.

They aren't fooling anyone but themselves. I seriously doubt if any of the studios are fooled. I doubt if legitimate media are fooled. We're certainly not fooled here. The sales of disks is what's continuing to count because that's an accurate indicator of who's significantly outselling whom. That's indicative of how consumers are using their "gaming" devices, as well as their standalones. Fanboys and Tosh can cook the books all they want, but likely only the truly fanatic or the totally blind are really being fooled by this kind of spin.

To answer the header question, though--
Judging from their standard defense playbook, what do HD-DVD fanboys seem to be afraid of most?:

"Why do you keep saying we're Microsoft? Microsoft had nothing to do with us! It's all Toshiba's idea! How dare you claim that Microsoft had any part in our industry! WE'RE NOT MICROSOFT!!!!"

Isn't the knock on the PS3 is that it isn't selling well here or there or wherever and there are no good games for it?

If the x360 is two and a half years old (released May 2005) and it's sold 13.8 million and the PS3 is one year old (released Mid November 2006) and it's sitting at 6.55 million, it certainly would suggest it's selling on the same pace as the x360 has sold.

If there are no good games for it to produce sales of the PS3 on the same rate as the x360, then isn't it a simple deduction to make, that those machines are being purchased as stand alone players to watch bd movies?

They can't have it both ways, either it's a viable game machine that is jumping off the shelves at the same rate as their beloved xbox 360 or it's a stand alone player that acts as game machine when you're not watching a movie.

Since we know it's never an absolute market, some are strictly for gaming and still others are for movies and the sales of the bd movies are besting hdud 2:1 Using the law of averages or a similar attach rate, whichever you prefer to call it, I would think it's not out of the realm to deduce that a minimum of 1.1 million of the PS3's in the US has been sold as bd players that also play games giving us a 2:1 advantage in installed base hardware as well as movies purchased. That would make the US sales of PS3's 42% as bd players that also play games. Not the 20% figure that gets tossed about.

If the 20% figure is correct and only 500,000 PS3's are used for movies, it's still giving us an advantage of 900,000 to 750,000 in hardware and a much higher attach rate.

Hey,

I read a lot of the HD DUD faithfull posts on other sites. Don't know why I do it, I guess I'm impressed with their ignorance. Anyway,.. with all the bickering and posts suggesting this or that will turn the tides, I think in the end big money will once again step in and make the decision regardless of what any end user wants.

Just like the Paramount deal was a simple matter of a huge sum of money, I think a similar deal will be struck that simply ends the war and all the back and forth struggling by end users to understand and interpret the war will just wind up being wasted time.

The exception really would be the Transformers week sales. HD DUD pulled out all the stops to try to win that week and thanks to efforts of Blu Ray supporters we actually pulled off a major upset. That's as close as it will ever get to actual end users playing a role I think.

I expect studios to shift alliances next year and the shape of the war to change drastically. Lots of cash is at stake and if a single format could be win decisively then it could take off like DVD did and be a monster.

I know that Blu Ray has replaced DVD nearly fully for me. I will re-buy any of my DVD's on Blu Ray even if I get $2 back for the DVD and spend $20 for the Blu Ray.

I don't think the HD DUD are afraid of much. All but the most hardcore have bought into Blu Ray at this point and are building a collection. They are trying to not notice the Blu Rays always work without glitches while the DUD's are still a "get lucky if it plays" type of thing. For most of them,.. they just can't hide from the truth for much longer.

Blu-ray.coms member "w_tanoto" put together that excellent video. It would be nice to see it updated to present week numbers.
