Default Someone said that you wont notice 1080p on a 40" TV.

Is this true? I was thinking about a Sony XBR3 (40").

1080p is geared more towards 37" and higher....any lower and it's still nice to have, but not necessary...

I had a 1080p 42", and now I have a 1080i 50".

At 42", you could notice a very slight difference out to about 8 to 10 feet max.

The difference, however, is extremely slight. We're talking when looking at the very tiny numbers in the upper right of James Bond's phone screen when on a close-up in Casino Royale. You can read them in both 1080i and 1080p, but they are a tiny smidge clearer in 1080p.

The background, and in movement, is where you see the slight differences, as well. But we're talking very, very tiny things.

I just got back from best buy where I saw the new samsung 40 inch 1080P lcd and let me tell you. I was rolling in the aisle crying. it was GORGEOUS. They were demoing off the spidey trailers and I was just crying. It was GORGEOUS. If you have any sense of true picture quality. You will notice the difference.

Thats how I felt seeing the 40" XBR2 demoing the blu-ray of "Into the Blue". Oh man that water looked so nice, not to mention Jessica Alba

So then I said, GET ME THE 46" XBR3 RIGHT NOW!

Yes. On that screen you WILL notice a difference. Which is also the reason its the display model for the demos in Best Buy, Circuit City and Sears (Atleast around here thats what they use).

Looks beautiful, doesn't it?

No. 40 inch is fine to have. 37 is okay, but 40 inch or more is best option and you can notice difference, depend how your eye and how evironment is where hdtv set is.

I have 40inch but it is not 1080p, it is set on 1080i, however, I can notice big difference and it look better, because it is Sony Bravia.

When you have 40 inch, after own it for few years, you are gonna want big one, big one, bigger one!

Yes absolutely true...unless you sit 3 feet or less from the screen!

On a 40" screen, you will not be able to tell 1080p from 720p at any "normal" seating distance. Your eyeballs (technically your retina) just arent that sensitive to resolution.

What you WILL notice are differences in color, brightness, contrast and black level.

I would seriously recommend a 42" plasma 720p set instead of the flashy 1080p lcds. Regardless of what you may have heard, plasma is a superior technology for video displays and lifespan is going to be in the neighborhood of 10-15 years of normal viewing. It will give you much better blacks, better color and contrast, and will cost you about $1000 less!

1080p is a good thing, but you will not notice much of a difference on such a "small" screen (remember when 36" TVs looked HUGE?) If you are on a 60" or larger screen, its a must have feature, but I think 1080p on sets this size are all about marketing and being able to charge a premium price for sets that have become increasingly commoditized in recent years.

More important considerations than resolution are color, contrast, build quality, and available settings.
Better to go with a brand name like Sony or Samsung in 1080i than a thrifty 1080p model.
