Default High Def 2.0 Conference (12/4/07 Today!)

Anybody going to this? or have any information? I suggest we use this thread to track what takes place there or any rumors or news. I have placed a link below that seems to link to the official site. they say they will post news and info but I bet our blu-ray.com network will get more info.

I realize that but I thought some people might have some insite into what will be said "tommorrow" on the 4th.

I just read in the insider thread that only BD will be represented no DUD folks are presenting? Interesting

No Warner Bros. either as far as I can tell from the website.
Wonder why? They don't want to show favoritism?

if WB won't be there, you just know HD-DVD fanboy will use this to say that this is final proof WB will go HD-DVD exclusive... anyways I'm hoping that we hear some exciting news from this conference.

It wouldn't surprise me if after the Blu-ray event where some quotes made it look like WB had decided that they were going to Blu-ray exclusively, WB decided to control what is put out a little better. If they are worried about anybody misrepresenting what is said (either in tone or otherwise), it is easier to control that with press releases and things along those lines.

I do find it interesting that no studio which releases on HD DVD seems to be represented at this event though. Even if they are upset with HMM it seems like shunning their event (I'm assuming it is their event) wouldn't be a good way to get them on your side. And it seems like the major studios advertise in that magazine.

This was a Home Media Magazine conference, so one would expect anything of interest will warrant a headline or two there in the upcoming days, or perhaps a featured article in next weeks magazine. Plus Bill Hunt is sure to have something to say about it since he was listed on one of the panels.

Analysts predict a stalemate. Pretty grim article.

Very pessimistic article in my opinion, I don't agree with that at all. Studios will want to start capitalizing more on the lucrative Hi-def market, the revenues from DVD are going down very quickly. I can't see it dragging out that long, or for that matter, their share breakdown does not make ANY sense. They say 55:45, it's been considerably over 60:40 almost all year.

It goes to show that someone HAS to do something to change the game.
Articles like that are bad for blu, whether they are true or not has nothing to do with it.

Those predictions mean very little. If anybody were able to forecast future events with any accuracy, they would make billions in the stock market. One significant move and all of those projections go out the window.

It is today.

http://highdef.homemediaconferences..../v42/index.cvn

Judging by the event schedule ( http://highdef.homemediaconferences....x.cvn?id=10006 ) it's almost "Gift Bag Distribution" time. What would Hollywood be without swag? And what kind of swag does one get at a High Def conference? (It's funny/strange they list this on the event schedule).

I agree that they really don't mean much. But where I think they are important is in showing the studios a likely scenario if they don't act to change it. A 60:40 split in either direction is not the kind of thing that any studio would want.

People can think about what that article predicts and what a Warner VP said recently:

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/warner-a...eutrality/4866
Quote:
"One thing that may be changing is our strategy," he said. "When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter."
and I think they will come to the conclusion that Warner would like to avoid the outcome predicted.

BTW: I think this part of that videobusiness article:
Quote:
“It’s natural for consumers to be concerned of the two formats because of the extensive press coverage of the format war,” Jayalath explained. “Both camps are publicizing every little victory, and that reinforces the idea of war and the consumer then is sitting tight. That is why there is eight-to-one BD dominance, but only two-to-one dominance in software.”
is just ridiculous. The PS3s are going to have a lower effective rate. Anybody with half a brain should have known that before it ever launched IMO and even if there wasn't all the war talk the PS3 would have a lower effective attach rate than standalones on both sides. I do think the war itself is holding things back somewhat, but that the answer to that is to get one winner, not to sit around and let a stalemate continue for years. My preference is to not let one side that would be happy with a stalemate continue keeping consumers from getting one format for the first world, like we did with DVD.

One more comment on the videobusiness thing predicting a stalemate. Years ago I remember a doctor who decided that telling his patients what they should do to be healthy wasn't working as well as he hoped, so he would switch it around and he wrote a recipe for how to be unhealthy. Things like how much fat to eat, etc. If I was trying to scare a studio like Warner into action to stop a stalemate, an article like that predicting something they shouldn't want (but could stop) would be one way I would consider doing that. Kind of like a doctor telling a patient they predict a heart attack within 5 years. Might get the patient to do something to change the future.

I doubt that the predictions were made for that reason, but that is how I think studios like Warner and Universal should take them.
