Take elite commandos, send them on a do-or-die assignment – and sit back and watch the action explode. The men-on-a-mission formula that worked in 1967’s The Dirty Dozen and in Where Eagles Dare (released in the U.S. in 1969) provides another salvo of volatile screen adventure with this strike force saga released in 1968. Rod Taylor and Jim Brown are among a mercenary unit rolling on a steam train across the Congo, headed for the dual tasks of rescuing civilians imperiled by rebels and recovering a cache of diamonds. The film’s violence is fierce, unforgiving, ahead of its time. Quentin Tarantino would offer a tribute of sorts to this red-blooded wallop of a cult fave by using part of its compelling score in Inglourious Basterds (2009).

First saw this back in the '90s when my dad showed it to me, and I loved it. I immediately went out to Suncoast Video and special ordered the VHS, and watched it all the time. It has one of the worst scores I've ever heard in a film but it's still a great little flick. Brutal, too. Rod Taylor and Jim Brown make a great duo. Looking forward to the Blu-ray.

What a brilliant film and a great slate of releases.

Perhaps one day we'll also get the notoriously difficult to see Darker Than Amber which also starred Rod Taylor and had one of the most memorable fist fights I'd ever seen.

Yeah that fight scene is world class.

Speaking of Rod Taylor and fist fights, I've always wondered if the story about him whooping up on his co-star here, Jim Brown, at the Playboy mansion has any merit.

Your comment reminded me of DARKER THAN AMBER and the epic battle RT wages against the blonde mopped William Smith.
There's another one we could use on Blu. I wonder who owns it?

I love DOTS and am thrilled it's getting a new scan, saw it on TCM HD recently and it was not pretty.

Legend has it it was a real fight. I have a crappy fullscreen copy of the uncut version, hard to tell if it was real or not.

From the obviously fake stage blood in the scene, I'd guess that was just hype. Plus from the number of camera setups, they'd have had to be fighting for real for a whole day.

Did they give a date on this? WAC titles have been getting released a couple months after they announce them, right? I think that's been the norm...

dark of the sun, one of the all time great action/adventure men on a mission films. hopefully someday we also get the film the hell with heroes an action/adventure from 1968 with rod taylor.
