"24" Spin-off at Fox Would Revolve Around a New Male Character

Jack Bauer is passing the stopwatch.

Fox is developing a "24" spin-off that would revolve around a new twenty-something male terrorist hunter, but the intention would be for Kiefer Sutherland‘s Jack to weave in and out as a guest star, franchise overlord Howard Gordon confirmed to TVLine Sunday at the Critics Choice Television Awards.



The project would find the new male antihero working alongside an older, more seasoned female agent (not Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan, although she also may appear).

It would also launch as a limited series, similar to last year’s acclaimed "24: Live Another Day", but I’m told the offshoot could easily become a long-term property for Fox.



Last month, Gordon told Yahoo TV that the spin-off would maintain the “real-time concept” and that the story “is in the tradition of 24.”

"24: Live Another Day" vets Manny Coto and Evan Katz will serve as writers and EPs.

What’s 24 without Jack Bauer? We may soon find out. Fox has always been open about the fact that they’re actively looking for ways to continue the 24 franchise. The series came to a close in 2010, but it was revived for the 2014 miniseries 24: Live Another Day. While not necessarily a critical smash, Live Another Day was a solid ratings hit, and so it should come as no surprise that Fox is in the midst of developing a new spinoff series.

Per TV Line, executive producer Howard Gordon reveals that the 24 spinoff will revolve around “a new twentysomething male terrorist hunter.” However, Bauer won’t be entirely left out of the proceedings, as Gordon noted that Kiefer Sutherland would weave in and out as a guest star.

This new lead antihero character will be teamed up alongside an older, more seasoned female agent in the spinoff, which will first launch as a miniseries then could go on to become a long-term show if the numbers are solid. Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan from Live Another Day may also make an appearance, but she won’t be the aforementioned co-star. Manny Coto and Evan Catz, who spearheaded 24: Live Another Day, are writing and executive producing this new spinoff series.

I’m incredibly curious to see if the 24 property works without Jack Bauer. He certainly toed a fine line in his tenure, and while Live Another Day was semi-entertaining, it was clear that the world had changed so much since 24 last went off the air that Bauer’s attitude/skill set isn’t particularly relevant anymore. It should be interesting to see how/if this new lead character is different.

That would be the only way to get me to watch any of the episodes since there won't be any Jack and probably not any Yvonne Strahovski.

Why not just bring Tony back in? They already brought him back from the dead, why not just make a spinoff season about him? Or even his time working rogue before Season 7?

This show is nothing without Kiefer. Even during the dismal stretches he was the only thing remotely compelling. No thanks. Kiefer isn’t even that old, he could do this shit for another 5 seasons at least.

Not really interested. The series doesn't really stand up to reviewing at the best of times and without Sutherland I don't really care at all.

Looking forward to it but it feels like a missed opportunity not using Kate or Tony as the main character. Hopefully we still get a few older characters just so the show doesn't feel too different.

Ridiculous decision. What we need is a full season 9 with Tony Almeida breaking Jack out of the Russian prison, with the help of Yvonne Strahovski's character.

not a full season 9, more closer to 12 episodes like live another day so it cuts out the filler and brings out the quality of the show better.

definitely on tony almedia breaking out jack, with help of a special guest character whos just as badass as jack and if not better than jack (cmon, bourne can kick jack's ass with ease for example) ..im guessing somebody either late 40's or 20's depending on the storyline of the character.

...any big name actor u got in mind?

Posted this several times on these forums, Yes the next Season needs to be a 24 Tonyesque series Carlos Bernard would be the perfect person to take the mantle.

Next Season would be simple dont have it focus on Jack at all, Have it focus on Tony and his Redemption from what he did in Season 7. At the end of the Season make it a full 24 episodes at the end of the Season Chloie finds Tony and all she says is I found him... Fade to Black

Season after that is all based on the Rescue attempt of Jack in Russia. Tony, Kate, and Chloie work together to break Jack out. Keifer does not even need to show until the last episode thus ending his run in the series as well as mitigating his cost for the series and cemeting it with Carlos as the new lead.

For all we know, Russia is going to pardon Jack as well.
The ones who wanted him dead are now all dead.
They may be using him to help them with an Anti-Terrorist agency to stop something and will then pardon him.

Tony, Kate and Chloe not knowing this wind up interfering and causing the terrorist to escape and they "rescue" Jack only for him to explain what is really going on and then they all start working together to stop the terrorist.

The series should end on a high note with Jack finally having a Happy Ending!
He damn well deserves it after all the crap he's been through!
