Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but my friend just told me all dvds/music/blu rays are supposed to be released on Fridays now instead of Tuesdays. He said the change was supposed to happen in July.
EDIT : My friend was only talking about music releases. Apparently new albums are to be released on Fridays now instead of Tuesdays. His friend works for a record company, and they've made the switch I guess. |

New Friday street date is for the music industry only and that took effect last week.
My guess is that within the next 5 years, the Movie and Video Game industry will also switch to Friday releases. Just makes more sense to have everything out on the same day. |

And while all Blu-rays aren't being moved to Friday, some will, as any music Blu-rays will now be. |

"Oh, the album now comes out the same day? Well, I guess I'll just pay for it. I was going to pirate it, but now I won't," said no pirate ever. |

some music releases have moved to Monday for some releases.
I think Fridays for Movies also could be problematic. Disney used to always release their VHS on Fridays. BUt can you imagine Amazon Prime Release day delivery when a delay happens you won't get it until Monday! |

But the problem is that a lot of times the music is coming out before any release dates so it's not really a great solution lol. I guess it'll curb SOME piracy but not a ton |

Tuesday does seem like an antiquated day. Not sure who that started, but I always assumed movies were released on Tuesday so that, with 3 day rentals (which were the norm back in the 1980s), the titles would be back in stock Friday for the weekend, and it was easier to stock on a weekday that was less busy.

The Tuesday release day was chosen because when they had to pick one common day, they picked the slowest day of the week so they could drive more customers into stores. With so few people going into stores for media anymore, it really isn't needed anymore...

I remember in the early/mid 90s, all new movie releases (rentals only back in the day as tapes were really, really, expensive unless it was a high profile title) were always released on Wednesdays. If the movie was priced to own, it was released on a Friday.
I think the Tuesday release schedule really took effect once DVD hit and nearly every title was priced to own. |

The idea of changing music release day from Tuesday to Friday is sad in an offbeat way. Tuesdays were always so much fun while I was growing up, because I loved seeing what new records were coming down the pipes.
The Tuesday releases gave me something to look forward to in the middle of a school week or a work week, whereas I already look forward to Fridays for obvious reasons. |
