Default Analog stereo output on PS3 w BR movie playback

If I select 5.1 PCM soundtrack in the onscreen settings, is this used to create the analog stereo output (when using the AV cable), or is this output derived from the DD soundtrack, regardless of the setting?

RCA (Red/White) audio cable will not play 5.1

If you would like 5.1 surround you need to use either an optical cable or an HDMI cable.

I use the RCA outs (red and white, whoo!) from the PS3, hook up to the AUX input on my Home Theatre in a Box, and select Linear PCM or TrueHD when I play Blu-Rays. I get good sound for it being RCA outs.

There is a notable audio difference than from when I use the DD or DTS setting.

Note, I wasn't asking if I could get 5.1 through a stereo audio cable. I was asking if the stereo audio is derived from the pcm soundtrack or the DD soundtrack that is on the disc.
