Mommy Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() The film: It is excellent. The three leads are outstanding, but I really liked Suzanne Clément. This is the third film I've seen with her and she is a tremendous talent. The cinematography of course is very bold and very effective. Terrific soundtrack and the sequence with Celine Dion's On ne change pas is pure magic. Very simple film, but so powerful. Canada has found its Maurice Pialat. The disc: Wonderful presentation. My only minor concern pertains to the placement of the subtitles. On my disc they are a bit too low. When I project, everything is fine. But I was going through the supplemental features on my TV and noticed that they are positioned a bit too low. Anyhow, great, great Canadian film. And what an utterly disappointing decision from Lionsgate Films to release it only on DVD. We should have had a local U.S. release. Inexcusable omission. I also really liked Dolan's Laurence Anyways, which is out on Blu-ray in the U.S. via Breaking Glass Pictures. Also with a great soundtrack ![]() ![]() ![]() Lana's tune: Pro-B |

Lana Del Rey? Ugh. That's like an arthouse film throwing in Linkin Park or something. The french sure use the most cliched of American tunes for their art flicks. I hope it's used in an odd, ironic way like Firework in Rust and Bone.

I actually own Tom at the Farm, but hadn't yet gotten around to watching it, but I promptly found myself ordering Dolan's other films (sadly only available on DVD here in the UK; but for £3 each a future double dip doesn't really sting). I can't wait to check them out. Hopefully this will get a UK BD release, but if not I shall be importing the Canadian release. Thanks for the review. |
