Thumbs down Toshiba Denied WB's Move impacts players sales

In fact, putting it into perspective, during that specific week, it's important to recognize that the instant rebate promotions that had previously netted our players' manufacturer's had ended when the research was done.

Just like politics, it is all about spin.

I agree that they can't go on like this much longer. I recently was talking to a CC salesman when buying a TV and we both agreed that Toshiba is probably going to ride HD DVD right into bankruptcy. The sales guy even admitted that he practically has to give the players away at this point to move them.

It's like the little kid that does not want to lose so they keep challenging you to one more game even though playtime is over.

Toshiba is huge in many other venues, they are not going to risk their entire corporation on this tiny piece.

I'm most curious about any moves by Yoshihide Fujii since HD DVD appears to be his baby. He's also got the most public presence on the (few) HD DVD public announcemens. It's difficult (for outsiders like us) to know what the people above and below him really feel about the HD DVD player market, but presumably given MSFT's very close relationship with Toshiba, this might be a complex decision.

They are trying their best to hide the fact that they know this is over. But it is making them look like total morons.

Sony kept producing Betamaxes for years after VHS was declared the winner in the VCR format war.

Beta became totally irrelevant (except in professional circles) and was truly a niche product. VHS was the industry standard.

I think the Japanese companies must have a huge pride problem that prevents them from admitting their mistakes and moving on.

Maybe at some point their stockholders will pressure their board of directors to do something about it.

Logically that makes sense. But Toshiba was behind the eight ball from day one from a content support perspective. Remember when Paramount dropped BD that they were already doing HD DVD so HD DVD really did not gain any support. They had only three studios from the start and now they are shortly going to have only two. Toshiba should have thrown the towel in on HD DVD back when it was apparent that Sony was going to push BD with the PS3.

DailyGame reported same, but under the NPD quote instead of HDDVD PG

I guess the editor is a HDDVD fanboy?
