“New Line has announced that they will be bringing the remake of the musical 'Hairspray' to Blu-ray on November 20th. Extras will include a new musical number, the documentary "You Can't Stop the Beat", a "Hairspray Extensions" featurette, audio commentaries and deleted scenes. The Blu-ray release will also feature a "Behind the Beat" picture-in-picture experience.”
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=498 Calling all Blu-Ray supporters!!! We must all purchase this film, a first BD film from New Line Cinema. We must all support New Line, and show them we, BD supporters, mean business. New Line is owned by WB; however, how they handle their film spec is all up to them. So far WB has treated BD as the underdog. Now New Line is going to release their first film on BD with advanced BD features, such as, PIP. We cannot let them down, and give them a chance to reconsider. Who is with me? Long live Blu-Ray. |

Don't get too excited. Crank & Dragon's Lair has PIP, too. They just encoded the whole movie again with the commentary/bonus stuff. This is probably the same. No way someone is going to release a Blu-Ray title with features for non-existent 1.1 profile players. (2nd video processor needed.)

This most likely means that any neutral buyers will buy the blu-ray version, since they won't be able to get HD-DVD for a while. That's great. ![]() |

Hey I have not seen this film, and most likely I would not like it. I just want WB to realize if New Line can do it then so can they. I want to support New Line because they are supporting BD more than WB, and because they are making their parent company look bad.
First, their first film will feature PIP, and none of WB’s for BD does. Second, they are going to release their film on BD before HD-DVD, unlike WB, who released majority of their titles on HD-DVD first. Third, we need to support New Line so much that they might become BD exclusive, because I want LOTR on BD only. |

GoldenRedux, I'm just being logical. Doing a mandatory 2nd video processor PIP feature that can play on 0 players in the marketplace currently is not something I'd do. I'd use the extra BD space and do a 2nd encode and make everyone happy. No FUD here. Crank and The Descent did a good job.
I can tell you for a fact that Warner currently has a video encode PIP title in the works for BD, so why can't New Line, too? |

next to 300 and Close Encounters, I believe this is the third most critical BD release EVER. Why? 300 let WB know where the market is. Because we crushed HD DVD in sales (and continue to), they chose to reject the Toshiba bribe and remain neutral. Close Encounters is the first Spielberg release to Hi-Def. If we eat this like a fat kid eats cake, we can expect many more titles from the S man...and possibly from Paramount and Universal.... Hairspray is no different. It's New Line's first entry into the fray. They have some major titles that I want to see in Blu - so we need to convince them through our purchase that we literally mean business (I for one never saw it, but my fiancee did, so I'm going to buy it for her)

But but but...
It's Hairspray! John Travolta in a Fat Suit - where's Divine? Ok I may have to get it because some of the exteriors were done in my neighbourhood here in Toronto and me youngster has chatted it up. Thanks GoldenRedux for nipping that dual encode crap in the bud. I'm speculating at least two new players will be declared 1.1 after the Round Robin testing is complete in mid-October. I'd also speculate that the PS3 will be 1.1 before Christmas. Why *anyone* thinks that Sony won't invest in the PS3 user base is beyond me. The PS3 has always been part of the BDA's strategem - it has been the front line that has allowed the CE infrastruture to get itself established. The fruit of that strategy will begin to bear come this Christmas. BD was *meant* to launch with the 1.1 profile. Its hand was forced with the early (and premature) launch of HD DVD. The PS3 has been the footsoldier and will continue to be so until games ship and the BDA transitions to standalones - somhwere around this Christmas - funny that. ![]() sonicbox, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you didn't simply sign up to pour cold water on this small positive for BD. Time will tell. btw - I personally don't give a hoot for PIP - waste of bandwidth in my book but then I'm a tech wonk ted Last edited by tvted; 09-11-2007 at 11:15 PM. |

![]() This is actually big news! With New Line part of Time-Warner, I wonder if Warner themselves will follow suit any time soon? Doubtful, but you never know... |

tvted, just a lurker before, but I had to comment since I'm aware of what Warner is doing with another BD title and it is definitely not 'real' PIP.
![]() Remember, PIP requires a 2nd video processor that doesn't exist on most of the standalone players. That's a fact. Yes, PS3 could be upgraded to 1.1 and it will most likely happen but that doesn't fix the rest. As an authoring house, I'd develop a feature that will work on all players. Why piss off any percentage of your potential buyers, when there is plenty of extra space on the BD? Crank and The Descent did this successfully. |

Warner has held back titles because of the lack of this very feature. Unless you are an Insider you have no more proof that Warner (New Line) will not be encoding for the lowest common denominator which is the PS3. The BDA has always indicated the first gen players will not have the necessary hardware to handle PIP. The vast majority of the BD player base i.e. the PS3 *will* be capable of said feature. If an authoring house is aiming at the majority of the BD base, they will produce for the PS3. ted |
