By BDA rules LOTR would have to be released region free.
Region coding on BD applies to new releases for a 12-month window. And, is specifically there for the reason that has forced NLs hand. Their contracts require them to protect the other territories. So, DVD people are happy. Blu-ray people are happy. And HD DVD folk can tell us how useless each and every NL title were anyway. Gary |

No, not my understanding. If New Line decided to region code Lord of the Rings, they can. If after a year they want to make a new run of them however, they have to release a version without the coding. UNLESS they add new content to it and presumably a new sku in which case they can code it again. Doesn't matter if it's catalog or not, any title can be coded for 12 months. It's how a company handles it afterwards. The idea is that the costs of doing changes for a new edition or changing it to remove region coding is money that doens't need to be spent so it encourages studios to not code in the first place. |

Seems rather pointless to region code a catalogue under those conditions, so perhaps rather than deal with studios bickering what constitutes a new release (e.g. were the LOTR-EE a new release?) the BDA decided to make the wording such that, as you say, the costs would be such that it doesn't make sense to release a true catalogue title coded to begin with. Out of curiosity, has a region coded catalogue title been released on BD? Gary |

I'm sure there are plenty of region coded catalog titles, particularly coming out of Europe. What people need to remember is that the world does not revolve around US releases and that there are numerous areas that are in competition for distribution. And not just with films but with TV series and more. This is particularly an issue in asia where there are plenty of shows, concerts, etc that are very specific in how they can be distributed overseas through the massive corporations that invest in the films and divvy up all the rights.
While the big studios are what will get things off the ground, everything is fleshed out by all the other studios and "infrastructre". |

But, a good part of southeast Asia (Japan, Korea, Signapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.) are region A like North America. India and China are the only major countries in the vicinity not in A. So an Asia/North America issue separation isn't really possible this time. And I guess the obvious question is: If region coding is so important, what does that mean to HD DVD in Europe and Asia? Gary Last edited by dialog_gvf; 09-12-2007 at 04:03 AM. |

If everything came out THIS MONTH, sales would boom for a few months while people get around to picking this stuff up. Then, almost nada. They know what they are doing. Gotta bait the hook first. |

They need to let everything settle, figure out how much he's owed, then move foward. They can't release LOTR without knowing how much Pete's gonna make or they will be back in court. ++++ And F all YI's "hairspray" is not a woman's movie. I'm a male, and I enjoyed the movie. And I will be purchaseing it. thanks. |

Travolta playing the same part as Divine is just too scary for me. What's next, Pink Flamingos remake? Just kidding.
Sorry, but as much as I would like to support New Line with Blu-ray, I cannot bring myself to purchase this movie. |
