Universal Studios Spartacus 4K UHD (1960)

Spartacus 4K Blu-ray
Spartacus 4K Blu-ray

Spartacus 4K Blu-ray (+ )
Spartacus 4K Blu-ray
Spartacus 4K Blu-ray Amazon Steelbook

Spartacus 4K Blu-ray

This should look outstanding!

Day 1 purchase and highly poignant with the recent passing of the great Kirk Douglas.

Jumping on the Stanley Kubrick bandwagon, Universal will also release Spartacus on 4K Ultra HD in June.

Just picked up that new steelbook over the holidays. Oh well, maybe I can re-purpose it for this 4K release.

Hopefully this looks great. From the thread in the BD forum, it seems I'm the only one who thought the remastered Blu-ray looked a little filtered. Maybe the recent Arrow disc of "An American Werewolf in London" proves Universal wasn't above DNR'ing their 4K remasters for 1080p BD even if it wasn't so obvious at the time? Anyway, I'm hoping this is better than something like their Apollo 13 disc.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson from the response to the remastered BD vs the old one.

Filtered? No. RAH provided some grabs from the actual 4K master a few years ago at the HTF and when the BD came out I just had to do some comparisons with them. The BD runs it very close, the 4K has much finer grain and better retention of the tiniest details but then I'd expect no less. The BD is still amazing. Does this look filtered to anyone?

As for Apollo 13, which I don't disagree has some shortcomings (though for me it's mainly compression related rather than the remaster itself) have you not seen Big Lebowski or Furious 1 and 2 or Casino or Hulk or Scorpion King or Scarface or Schindler's List on UHD? Things have moved on just a little bit since then.

See above. Why is it that people's expectations for Universal's UHD transfers seem to get reset to "these guys are hacks" every time a new catalogue disc is announced?

There's no way Universal could think there's anyway to hide filtering with a chin like Kirks.

Pretty much the only people interested in Spartacus are those who buy discs I'd say.

Given Universal and Warner are teaming up. We might see a bizarre scenario where Spartacus and Ben Hur are offered in a double pack.

I was replying to the previous post. Point being, they realized the old BD was a mess so they fixed it, meaning there's no reason they won't knock this one of the park either. I mean, after Scarface and Casino there's really no reason to doubt them.

Top Gun will arrive on 4K in early June

So the same day that Top Gun comes out, look for Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005) and Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder (1990) in 4K as well.

Full Metal Jacket, likely in June.

Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows are coming to 4K from Warner in June as well.

Inglourious Basterds is on the way to physical 4K in June.

The Back to the Future Trilogy is coming to physical 4K from Universal this year. Given that the original film was released theatrically on July 3rd, 1985, it seems likely that this will be a June or July release too.
Quote:
Our sources tell us that Universal will thus be releasing David Lynch’s Dune (1984) on physical 4K later in the year (probably this summer or in Q3).
Just quoting all the times June and Summer is mentioned. Looks like I'm right again Geoff

Let the wave after wave of UHD back catalogue titles commence.

Your forgetting we have Deer Hunter for late May, 25th and something else I've forgotten. The point is June and probably July are going to be stacked months for back catalogue titles. Why? Because us nutters will buy them, pay the costs, then discount when next gen hits to boost the format.

Granted this might be mostly Warner and Universal. But if Paramount is getting in on it, great.

Indeed. Makes sense, they can both share the costs, and maximize profits in the increasingly niche physical world. I'm more worried Warner never released Gone With The Wind last year. I'm thinking they might be worried in today's climate about some negative press with it's depiction of slavery.

Even just a cursory look back at the last few years of UHD's existence will reveal a glut of titles released in the summer months - as catalogue tie-ins often are because that's when the sequel/reboot/remake is inevitably being released, like with the OG Top Gun and the other Crooze movies - then there's a bit of a lull and the Q4 assault happens because of that religious festival, Chrimblemas or whatever it's called. This all fits very conveniently with your 'next gen will save us' outlook but it just happens to work that way regardless.

That I do agree with though. Warners never ever shied away from continually re-restoring and re-releasing one of their prize assets before, but I think something's up.
