Default Rallying PS3 owners to buy Blade Runner

I know I could have buried this in another thread, but figured this is an important week and thought it was important enough to start a new thread.

Back around the beginning of the week Transformers came out on HD DVD, another member here asked for some help writing something to rally PS3 owners to the Blu-ray cause. I don't frequent any boards just for PS3 owners, but I wrote some stuff that I put here:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...521#post273521

and it was reportedly passed on. We now know that Blu-ray won that week 51:49 by Nielsen First Alert count, which meant that it wouldn't have taken a whole lot less support to only get a tie, or to lose that week to HD DVD.

This time I don't think Blade Runner week is in that much doubt, but the ratio for Blade Runner could help us to get Warner and New Line exclusively. So, I'm going to try writing something for that and people can post it on boards with just PS3 owners, send it (or part of it) to people they know who own PS3s, etc. (or tell me why it sucks ).

--- start cut here ---

This is mostly to PS3 owners in the US and Canada (release dates elsewhere are often different), but parts of it apply to PS3 owners everywhere. We've been in a critical phase for both the PS3 and the Blu-ray movie format, where the futures of both are tied to a large degree. The PS3 succeeding will help the success of the Blu-ray movie format and the Blu-ray movie format succeeding will help the success of the PS3.

The PS3 is currently in a battle as a game system, while it is also involved in the battle between the Blu-ray movie format and the HD DVD movie format. This Q4 is critical because studio support could change over the next couple of months, based largely on the performances of each format in this fourth quarter of 2007. Those who favor the PS3 and the Blu-ray movie format should obviously want any studio changes to go in Blu-ray's direction, but even strictly gamers who prefer the PS3 would likely be better off in the long run if the Blu-ray movie format can gain another advantage over the next couple of months.

There have been rumors recently about Blu-ray having the inside track to get Warner exclusively. One of Warner's crown jewels amongst older titles (Blade Runner) got a release date of December 18th and Warner (and other studios) will be watching sales for this title between HD DVD and Blu-ray, given that the releases have the same features and same prices, and that it is one of the last big neutral titles before the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early January. Supporting Warner by purchasing a Blu-ray version of this title could help to sway Warner Blu-ray's direction, and given that it is an older title, which usually results in lower sales, extra support is more likely to show up than with the big new titles which are released the same day as the DVD version. Warner definitely has a lot of pride in Blade Runner and they are releasing it in 5 disc sets with the final cut and other cuts. There is a Complete Collector's Edition and an Ultimate Collector's Edition, which comes in a little briefcase style package.

For those unfamiliar with this title, there is no guarantee that any one person will enjoy any one movie, but Blade Runner currently has the #103 spot for top 250 movies of all time based on user ranking on imdb.com (at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/ ).

For those looking for a gift for a PS3 (or other Blu-ray player) owner, Blade Runner on Blu-ray would make a great gift for a lot of PS3 owners and buying it this week could help show how much Blu-ray owners can support a good catalog title, and help Blu-ray gain an advantage with the studios.

The parent company of both Warner and New Line is Time Warner and they are getting a new CEO on January 1st (Jeffrey Bewkes, promoted from within). Mr. Bewkes was involved in the decision for Warner to go from HD DVD exclusivity to neutral in 2005 (it was reportedly his recommendation), and if we show enough success for Warner on Blu-ray with an important older title like Blade Runner being released on both formats, maybe we can help get one of his first decisions as CEO to be to go to Blu-ray exclusively. Both the Warner and New Line studios are likely to go together, so if Warner goes to Blu-ray exclusively it would probably mean getting New Line exclusively, and thus the Lord of the Rings movies exclusively. So, buying Blade Runner could help bring Lord of the Rings to the high definition format the PS3 supports, and avoid the situation of losing the studio that has those titles to the other side and not getting Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray in the future.

Warner is likely to get information about sales from just about any place that sells their titles, but to have a purchase have the best chance of showing an impact in data which everybody gets to see (like the Nielsen percentages), buying from Amazon.com, Best Buy, or Circuit City helps. Wal-Mart is not included in the Nielsen numbers and neither are most online sites (other than Amazon.com).

--- end cut here ---

Might be a little long , but people can suggest ways to cut it down if they want. Also, I kind of threw it together from some old stuff and new thoughts, so not sure how convincing it is. People are welcome to just borrow ideas from it and let others know that Blade Runner is kind of a special title, where buying it on Blu-ray this week could really help the format and the PS3 in general.

If anybody wants to post that on any boards that are just for PS3 owners, please mention where you put it, so others don't duplicate it.

I could never get into this movie when I saw it the first time and I actually tuned it off about 45 minutes into the movie.
