Default Does there seem to be more entitlement these days?

I don't know if it's just me or maybe as I get older I'm getting grouchy and noticing this, but are people becoming more entitled?

This comes up because I was getting in back and fourths on Facebook about the new NES mini that is coming out. Many people seem to believe that because the games are so old they aren't worth much and running emulators for them is justified because of age. They seem to think Nintendo and others should just give them out because they are old.

I've noticed it in other places too like people thinking Netflix should have everything they are looking for. As if that $12 a month they pay justify them having access to everything. I've seen people say they pirate movies and shows because Netflix doesn't have them and it's the studios fault for not putting it on Netflix. These people seem to have no idea that things need to be licensed and cost money. The world doesn't revolve around you.

I also know a guy who pirates smaller movies that aren't playing locally yet. Instead of waiting for it to be actually released he thinks he is justified to just watch it for free since Cinemark doesn't have it showing. This isn't supposed to be a I want it now so give it to me society.

So am I just getting grouchy as I get older or are people really seeming to have more entitlement?

I have a couple of friends who pirate movies. I don't think it's because they feel entitled, but because they are too cheap to buy them.
I see people swapping movies and tv shows and it's very surprising to me that this is so common.
To me, these pirated movies and tv shows are alike with that crappy mp3 music that everyone was stealing not so long ago.

I'm old and grouchy but don't care if people want to watch their shitty downloads.

Stealing copyrighted material, whether it be illegally downloading or copying music or movies, is just wrong. If you can't afford to buy it or rent it, then too bad. Live life without the movie.

Something's definitely changed in my lifetime at least, more so since the turn of the century imo. I think when society goes through a period of non-upheaval and relative stability and prosperity (I'm referring to the first world btw), it's the smaller things people begin to fixate on. As for why this happens, I don't know, lol. I have some theories but they're just that: theories.

You're totally right. A lot of people these days act like total children who throw temper tantrums when they don't get what they want for free. I really just see those people as scum of the earth and move on with my life. They're not worth paying any mind to. They're the same people who will constantly be dealt bad hands in life if they go on thinking the way they do.

I agree and it crosses over into every part of one's life. An example for instance is that many people finishing their education expect a well-paying job as soon as they shut the education door behind them. They study to be an engineer for example and expect to get paid $50K+ right away. Life doesn't work that way....you have to earn your chops by starting a little lower on the earnings scale.

That's just one example...there are thousands more.

$50K is a very low salary so I don't think it's a high expectation to want to get paid that amount right away. But then again, I live in NYC, so maybe my view of $50K is very different than non-NYers.

$50K most definitely is not a low salary where I live. That wouldn't be a low salary in very many places in this country. My wife and I do ok for ourselves and we make about $56K combined a year.

$52,000 is the national average, so it's not low. It's the standard. Many people in NYC are living off of that amount, hence the small apartments and people working multiple jobs. Hell, the median income of Staten Island is still just barely $70,000. The difference is cost of living being higher. I can own a 6,000 sq ft home in Ohio for $500,000 while that same luxury is millions elsewhere. It's all relative.

I make over $60K and everyone tells me that my salary is extremely low and below average. That is why I feel like my company takes advantage of me. I feel that they underpay me. I try to look for other jobs but when I ask for a $70K salary (which is only a little more than what I get paid now), they decline my offer. Companies today are very cheap and that's surprising since NYC jobs should be paying more.

You're missing the point of my post, which was based on entitlement. Wage differential exist everywhere as the cost of living varies by area and country. So let's leave that out of the discussion.

Is it reasonable to ask for the same salary as a qualified/experienced working Engineer when one has no practical experience?

I understand your point. What I am saying is that $50k is a good starting salary and $100k is a good medium salary for more experienced workers and over $100k is an above average salary for very experienced workers.

I know a nurse anesthetist who lives in NYC and makes at least north of $100k and lives in a one bedroom apartment probably at 1,000 SF and that's a luxury apartment. Looking at availabilities in that complex, that's like $4,000 a month.

She can easily cross the river in NJ and have 3x as much space for less than that a month.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!!!

$4000/month where i live will get you something close to a mansion.

this house:

[Show spoiler]

granted i know this isn't a mansion, but it's still a damn nice house.

is about $1495/month. so you can imagine what more than twice that will get you.

Yeah, but if said person lives where you live, they will not be making north of $100k doing the same job. So it goes both ways.

I'm sure I can sell my house and get something quite nicer if I moved south.

No, people are feeling more entitled lately. Because everything is becoming easier to access and get a hold of, people don't find things special.
