Default Big Eyes - April 14, 2015

Big Eyes Blu-ray
Big Eyes Pre-order
Big Eyes Blu-ray Review

Quote:
The Weinstein Company and Anchor Bay Home Entertainment will bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Tim Burton's latest film, Big Eyes (2014), starring Amy Adams, Krysten Ritter, Christoph Waltz, Jason Schwartzman, Terence Stamp, Danny Huston, and Jon Polito. The release will be available for purchase on April 14.

Official synopsis: Directed and produced by Tim Burton, Big Eyes is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane's were actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. Big Eyes centers on Margaret's awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.

Special Features:
  • The Making of Big Eyes Featurette
  • Q&A Highlights

I'm looking forward to my blind buy as well.

I'm shocked it took a month for anyone besides me to post in this thread. I know the movie didn't do big business at the box office, but still.

It's odd, but there is a bigger thread in the Movies section:

The Q&A from the extras is the one that Lana Del Rey participated?

I wouldn't be sold on a blind buy.

Went and saw this in theaters, had pretty high hopes for it. Left super bummed. Nothing about this film stood out, and it just kind of...exists. I can't remember my original score, but it's probably around 2/5.

I was just at Target and noticed that the DVD includes a booklet. The BD does not.

I saw it in theaters too, and, with it being a Burton film, I had high hopes. It doesn't really seem like a Burton film (except for about 10 seconds when we saw people with the big eyes), and that's disappointing. The acting was fine, but I wasn't really feeling the film as a whole.

That is really strange that they didn't put that in the Blu-ray release as well. Sometimes a DVD release will have a slipcover that the Blu-ray release doesn't have, but that's usually it.

At the end of the day, I'm still perfectly happy with my Blu-ray. I look forward to watching it at some point this week.

It's idiotic in 2015. I understand that the DVD may outsell the BD in the long run, but what is the point of printing a booklet for non-cinephiles? They're going to throw away the booklet anyway.

This was pretty good, although Christoph Waltz's performance was just a little too over the top cartoonish for me. I do like the visual style of the film though. Will probably grab this once the price drops down a little.

I recently went through all of Tim Burton's films in anticipation of this one, and I gotta say it's one of his best. The story is not groundbreaking or anything, but it's well written, and it has a playfulness that has been missing in his live-action films since at least Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. And like with Ed Wood, it seems like working on truth-based stories that don't allow him to bring imagined worlds to life brings out some of the most creative visuals he can come up with. I hope he keeps working with Bruno Delbonnel because they bring out the best of each others. And Amy Adams gives the best performance he has ever directed.

My one complaint though is that shoehorned Lana Del Rey song in the middle. I like her, but this song is dreadful, and adds nothing to the scene where it plays. Since it follows the scene in the supermarket, a moment of silence or a sweet and quiet tune in the background would have been perfect. And I bet that's the way it was supposed to be since the first screening for members of Film Independent didn't have any of her songs, and it was announced that she'd be writing the songs for the movie after that screening. The song in the end was better and it worked.

That should've been included as an alternate soundtrack.

Just a heads up: This is $14.99 at Costco this week. It's an instant rebate at checkout, so don't be fooled by the $21.99 price sticker. My store didn't even have any signs up to show that it's on sale.

Look forward to watching it. It was a blind buy.

I don't disagree that it's idiotic. I was just basically saying that I won't lose any sleep over not getting the booklet.

I agree but I would blame the writing and directing more than Waltz. Otherwise, excellent film and Amy Adams was great.
