Default Hatfields & McCoys - July 31, 2012 Review

Hatfields & McCoys Blu-ray
Hatfields & McCoys Blu-ray Review

Quote:
In July, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring Hatfields & McCoys to Blu-ray. Directed by Kevin Reynolds (The Count of Monte Cristo), this epic Western miniseries focuses on the intense rivalry between Civil War veterans "Devil" Anse Hatfield (Kevin Costner, Dances with Wolves) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton, Frailty).

Sony's Blu-ray presents the five-hour television program in its 1.78:1 broadcast aspect ratio with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The disc also contains the following supplements:

The Making of Hatfields & McCoys featurette
"I Know These Hills" music video featuring Kevin Costner and Modern West

Hatfields & McCoys is expected to street on July 31st.

Great mini-series. I made sure that I watched it every night on The History Channel. Unbelievable that this is a true story 22 Emmy nominations too. I might have to wait until a GB or BF sale or some other price drop, though, for now. Priorities...priorities

I just ordered my copy as I wasn't able to watch the broadcast. $24.99 for a mini-series is certainly a good price.

If you live near a Best Buy they also have it for $24.99 and with the $5 coupon from DVD Upgrade & Save it's $19.99.

I made sure I didn't watch it ... I was randomly flipping through channels and came across it. Watched 30 min and decided right then I was picking this one up on Blu-ray as it captured my interest immediately. I wanted my first time seeing this to be on Blu-ray ....

Should be able to pick this up for $9.99 after RZ coupon and Upgrade and Save .....

It was one of those films/mini's that I'm glad I watched because it was good. However, its not one that I could see myself watching again. If someone were to ask my why, I don't know that I could give an answer. Rescue Dawn is another film I feel the same way about. It was good, with fantastice performances, but not something I would be in the mood to just pop in and watch.

I am feeling the same thing. I've watched the first 2 episodes on a friend's DVR trying to figure out if its worth owning on blu ray for me. But I just don't see why the reviews have been so great. It is definitely high quality, has some emotional drama here, and better than lotta shows/minis I have seen on TV. Can someone enlighten me? I am interested in what happens at the end of the story but not really connected to these characters or want to route for any of them. The hot-headedness of some of these characters really start to annoy me.

I am not normally a big Western fan but I did like the more recent films like Unforgiven, True Grit, and 3:10 Yuma. But this mini doesn't have the replay value for me that my favorite TV shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and Sherlock have.

Thumbs up Costner the Cowboy

Just finished the mini-series and thought it was a well done production. Sets and location really gave you a feel for the era. Liked the fact that it didn't really pick sides (a slight skew towards Costner's Hatfield family was noticable), telling the story from both viewpoints.
I found myself not taking sides as I could go either way and I'm usually a black and white / no grey kind of guy. Well worth the money and the time.

I agree, watched all 3 parts the night I picked it up. I would not hesitate watching it again and plan on doing so with my wife this time. She is not generally a western fan but I know she'd like this.

I watched and enjoyed it quite a bit. IMO the first 2 parts are the best with the 3rd being the weakest. I say that because the 3rd part felt rushed. Rushed in the sense that it moved too fast given the amount of stuff going on and it makes me wish they wouldve made this a 4 part mini-series so they could flesh the 3rd part out a bit.

Not sure how I felt about most of the characters. ALL the men in these familes have big mouths and quite a bit of what happens throughout couldve been prevented had someone told the guy next to them to shut the hell up and it doesn't help that these characters seemed fueled by alcohol 90% of the time, which I'm sure helped with the "hot headedness".

Overall I'd rate it a 4/5. Its well made and interesting to watch but some may feel a little letdown at the end of it. IMO it ends rather abruptly...almost how the fighting begins rather abruptly.

I think I'm going to get this with The Walking Dead S2 so I can get the $10 giftcard. It's still $24.99. I've contemplated blind buying, and reactions are so positive.

$9.99 on Amazon right now. Almost half a buck off the regular price!

Well put. I think they wanted to avoid showing favor to one side or another, so none of the main characters could be 100% likable. A lot of of the hot-headedness also seems to be fueled by previous events for which they really wanted to retaliate. The anger toward the other side just built up and built up which led to almost nobody on either side wanting to stop the violence once it started again.

I think it's worth watching more than once. I don't think there's enough there to where you're going to discover something new each time, but it's still entertaining and it does a pretty good job of putting you in the time and place.
