Default funny HD-DVD Stuff...and how stupid is J6P

I find this scary and funny at the same time. I've been reading the 3 star and 1 star reviews of the HD-DVD of Planet earth on Amazon.com. They can be found here:

http://www.amazon.com/review/product...y=addThreeStar

http://www.amazon.com/review/product...rBy=addOneStar

Some of my favorite quotes
Quote:
Unfortunatley, when I received the 4 DVD's they did not work. Major disappontment since they were a gift. The person I sent Planet Earth invited people over to view the cd's .... no luck. Plus, it ended a nice planned evening.
Quote:
When I first got my hd-dvd player, this was one of the hd-dvd's I received. i was pretty impressed by the quality compared to it's dvd pq, but was not totally impressed. my brother picked this up though for his ps3 blu-ray player and kept going on on how clear the picture was, so i told him it was good but not that good. so i go over to his place and was AMAZED on how much clearer the picture was. keep in mind that we both have the same tv's on the same settings.
Quote:
all in all, this is a great show...but when it comes to quality seeing is believing, and seeing it on blu-ray made me regret buying it in hd-dvd format.
Quote:
we purchased two sets of this dvd, one for a gift the other for ourselves. the gift was perfect! its a great dvd! when ours arrived we were so excited! unfortunately, it would not load, not one of the dvds worked. so we are in the process of getting it returned. we love the dvd though, and are anxiously awaiting the new one!
Quote:
I was unable to view the series because the DVD would not play in my state of the art HD DVD player or my brand new state of the art computer's DVD drive. Amazon was kind to send me a replacement CD, but the outcome was the same (I even tried to play the DVD at my office).
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the stupidity of people...

For awhile, I worked at Best Buy part time, for some extra money. This was back in March to August of this year. People ALL THE TIME would buy HD DVD and even BLU Ray thinking it was regular DVD. I can almost sort of understand buying hd dvd and thinking it was dvd ( although maybe the odd packaging should be your first clue) but people would also come back with BD movies and claim it doesnt work in their player. When i asked what BD player they were using they would say, oh its this dvd/vcr combo i have lol. People are universally stupid, doesnt just apply to the hd dvd versions.

Cause the stickers on the discs which clearly state 'Only Plays in Blu-Ray Player' don't call it out or anything. Ironically go look in the blu-ray reviews of PE and you'll find NOTHING about buying the wrong format...

It is the DVD Forum's own fault. HD is confusing enough for the average J6P consumer, that tacking on HD to a format with which they ARE already familiar just leads to more confusion. Then again, maybe that was their intent. Who knows?

Someone who thought everyone would be smart enough to get the joke.

Anyway... it's hard to believe how confusing it is for people that have DVD players and ask me at work if HD DVD will play in them on thier HDTV... I guess HDTV + DVD player = HD DVD to them.

We live in a world where they have to label hairdryers "Do not use while sleeping" (You know it's because someone did). It's not that hard to believe people assume that an HD-DVD disc will work with their HDTV and DVD player. You

But I still get a good laugh out of it nonetheless

Oh I do too.. I probably get asked that question 3 or 4 times a shift. I'm getting good at predicting when it's about to happen though.. the customer will be holding up an HD DVD with a really confused look on their face. It's amusing.

i just noticed that pages for hd dvds on amazon do not have any warning about not playing in dvd players....... anyone else catch this? on blu-ray items it says "IMPORTANT NOTICE: This disc is a high-definition disc and is compatible only with Blu-ray players. It will not play on a standard DVD player. Click here to see our selection of Blu-ray players." i don't see this on hd dvds anywere.....

considering what the amazon sales for planet earth on hd dvd seem to be plus the reviews of people trying to play in their dvd player, i'd bet there will be a lot of unhappy people come december 25th when their hd "dvds" don't play.

That's Amazon's loss for not warning the uneducated consumer. And this will actually hurt themselves... for example; Tons are sold before the holidays, Amazon orders a ton more to replenish their inventories, lots of PO'd customers return their HD DVD's... now Amazon is over-stocked... all because they wouldn't put a small warning on their site. Pity.

I agree with you, but it isn't "all" Amazon's fault that people are so damn dense.

They will probably successfully sue Amazon for "frauding" them.

It reminds me of the Darwin awards a couple years ago... this woman bought a Winnebago RV, got on the interstate, put the cruise on, and left the wheel to go make breakfast. Needless to say, it crashed... and she sued because Winnebago hadn't clearly stated in the manual that cruise control is not the same as autopilot.
lmao. Is it just me, or does anyone else this a new autopilot technology for your vehicle would have been reported all over the news?

Orrr, just for thought....

Amazon is hypothetically doing what retailers do all the time. Hoping J6P never mails in that rebate, (aka as hd-dvd movie that don't play in my $29 dvd HD player for my HD TV), and they keep the cash...

The best thing i have ever heard wasnt about blu sorry but this will tell you why labels are on everthing. I have no proof but this is what one of my teachers always told when i was in school. The reason that McDonalds puts hot on there coffee cups is because some lady sit a hot cup of coffee between her legs you can guess the out come of that. She tried to put cream and sugar in it and tried to sue Mikey Ds

Now that is a great story if its true

Just found out its true
http://www.vanosteen.com/mcdonalds-coffee-lawsuit.htm

dont you love people
Havent read whole artical but she did sue

Just an update on a couple of these stories being mentioned from a first-year law student. Straight from our Torts professor's mouth, the Winnebago story is not true, but the McDonald's coffee one is. The Winnebago story is just an internet rumor that was circulated a while ago as being true in an attempt to inspire tort reform throughout the country. The McDonald's coffee story, though, is 100% real, and the woman did win her suit.

The one concern I keep hearing people bring up is "will a regular dvd play in a blu ray player?" This message needs to get out there as well.

I can't believe the comments of the HD-DVD people on there slamming someone's post because they thought an HD-DVD could work on their standard DVD player. Is it the general consumers fault for assuming that since a cover conveniently says "HD" that it will work on their current set up?
