I'm all in for this one, although I might wait for a 4K combo.
Here's my movie content review of A Quiet Place that I wrote yesterday after seeing it at a theater... In the near future, the world has been overrun by terrifying monsters of unknown origin, and the few human survivors have learned to adapt to their new everyday reality by living in complete silence, since the creatures, which lack eyesight, have an extraordinarily acute sense of hearing and are able to catch and kill their prey by zeroing in on sounds. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who also directed the film, star as a married couple who reside with their children on an idyllic farm, where they live off of the land, communicate with one another by sign language, walk barefoot to keep from making noise, and occasionally wander into a nearby town to scavenge for random supplies. This family has come to terms with a life of constant fear, but they are still emotionally wrecked in the aftermath of a recent tragedy. The teenage daughter, who is deaf, struggles with normal adolescent resentments and rebellions. The mother, who is pregnant with a new child, is approaching her due date. The ticking time bomb presented by these developments threatens the uneasy existence of these characters, all of whom are already frazzled in a world where the slightest clumsy misstep or misjudged movement can result in a grisly death. A Quiet Place, which plays out almost like an old silent film and benefits from a 90-minute run time, lives up to its name as a breath of fresh air in our present-day world of two-hour-plus action movies full of ear-splitting explosions and cacophonous fight scenes. Since the story calls for minimal dialogue, the weight of this motion picture rests on the non-verbal performances of the incredibly talented cast, all of whom are able to built a rapport with the audience simply by way of facial expressions and mannerisms. Millicent Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, is particularly memorable as the daughter, and it's a cinematic stroke of genius that sound effects are mostly absent during the scenes that are depicted from her character's point of view. The choice of the screenwriters to begin this story during the months after the apocalyptic monster invasion is a wise one, since it allows us to become more intimately invested in the lives of the small handful of key players. Despite the muted tranquility of its narrative setup, however, A Quiet Place is far from soothing. As opposed to Ridley Scott's Alien, where, in space, nobody can hear you scream, this movie draws its white-knuckle sense of dread from the fact that, in order to stay alive, the characters cannot scream. Familiar jump scare tropes from countless horror classics are utilized liberally, but the filmmakers weave their innovative wonders here by focusing on the silent reactions of the cowering characters during these moments instead of focusing on the creatures themselves. Of course, the sinister invaders, which come across as blends of the iconic creations from Aliens, Predator, and Pitch Black, are quite fearsome when they are featured on the screen in all of their sharp-toothed glory and with their strange darting motions. A shocking early sequence is instrumental in setting the tone and showing us the high stakes of the scenario where our unfortunate protagonists dwell. My only grievance with this otherwise perfect horror movie is that the music score, which is completely unnecessary for this particular story situation, telegraphs the presence of the creatures in a way that is all too obvious. For the most part, though, A Quiet Place, which provides a sobering allegory for the notion that parents are never truly able to protect their children from the harsh and harmful dangers of our real world, burrows its way under the skin with grace and style. Just watch where you step, don't talk, and don't scream. |

The movie was mastered in Dolby Vision and has Dolby Atmos as well (going by Dolby’s website). Let’s hope paramount releases a UHD for it.

A lot of folks like to go into movies knowing absolutely nothing about the exposition or without having seen trailers, though, and I'm cool with that. |

Just got back from seeing it. What an intense experience! Theater was full, you could hear a pin drop. The acting was great, the sound design and cinematography was excellent, as was the score. The creatures, while not entirely original, were very scary. You will clutch your arm rests several times. There are two scenes with Emily Blunt that will make your heart pound! Easily the best horror movie of 2018.
Already pre-ordered the blu and score! Last edited by JMDiaz718; 04-08-2018 at 09:16 PM. |

Might go for the 4k on this one. Loved it and was surprised the audience was mostly well behaved with only the occasional cell phone. I decided to leave the gal at home since she likely wouldn't be able to tolerate the gaps in silence and would start talking to me during the movie.
