Default Why don't they make the BD player like this?

It would be a nice tribute for a fallen technology for Sony to do a commemorative 'Retro' design.

I wouldn't buy such an ugly machine, but I am sure someone would. Imagine the sweet wood grain design sitting amongst your BD collection. Maybe they could make the remote to match with the damn clicking noise every time you push one of the 14 large buttons.

Or maybe not, its probably a touchy subject.

We had the Sony Beta Hi-Fi. I think I watched that demo tape over 200+ times, and even now I can still recite lines from the free Raiders of the Lost Ark that came with it.

because at the current time its not even close to being profitable. in the future we probably will see somthing like this. there are retro looking cd players now. costs need to come down first.

I still have beta tapes, would love to convert them even to DVD. If a classic look came out for players and I had a room to put it in I would be the first in line to get one.

maybe when Blu-Ray officially wins. Then they can sell unique designs, almost how you can find dvd and cd players now in different designs. Now is not a time to waste money.

I really don't think they'd want to associate Blu-ray with Betamax.

As others have said, at this point it wouldn't be profitable. Plus, I don't know if specifically basing it on Beta would be a good idea. As docjan_uk said, people probably don't associate the two technologies with each other. And since Beta has a bad reputation for being a failed movie format, the last thing Blu-Ray would need is any more association with Beta.

Having said that, a player with an old fashioned boxy look that was common for a lot of the technology of the 80s wouldn't be so bad.

You should see this cheap Polaroid DVD player a friend of mine got a few years ago. It looked like it was designed by the makers of Atari 2600. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but that's what it looked like.

A friend of mine is putting a PC into a toaster( he's going to make the toast slots DVD drives ). I may pick something like that up at the flea market and give him a new project.
