Question 'Predestination' - Ethan Hawke, Spierig brothers (directing)

PREDESTINATION - staring Ethan Hawke, Saran Snook, Noah Tayler

Quote:
PREDESTINATION chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to prevent future killers from committing their crimes. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must stop the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time and prevent a devastating attack in which thousands of lives will be lost.

Quote:
An entrancingly strange time-travel saga that suggests a Philip K. Dick yarn by way of Jeffrey Eugenides’ “Middlesex,” or perhaps a feature-length mash-up of “Looper” and “Cloud Atlas,” “Predestination” succeeds in teasing the brain and touching the heart even when its twists and turns keep multiplying well past the point of narrative sustainability. Playfully and portentously examining themes of destiny, mutability and identity through the story of two strangers whose lives turn out to be intricately linked, sibling filmmakers Peter and Michael Spierig offer a skillful and atmospheric adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s 1960 short story ” — All You Zombies — ,” and if it’s better in the intimate early stages than in the more grandiose later passages, all in all it’s the sort of boldly illogical head trip that gives preposterousness a good name. Graced by an extraordinary breakout performance from Aussie newcomer Sarah Snook, “Predestination” is likely fated for a minor arthouse reception at best, but there will be plenty of cultists willing to indulge its heady and rarefied approach.

Has anyone else seen this yet? Absolute mind ****. Not sure what I think about it...as with most time travel movies, it will make your head spin if you try to think it through logically. But it is quite a wild and complex time travel ride.

Opens limited in January in the US, but it has already opened most elsewhere. You can find ways to see it now, if you know what I mean

P.S. I WOULD NOT watch any other trailer than this, as some of the longer ones give too much of the plot away...plenty of WTF moments in this film.

I've already seen the film, about 2 months ago now. to try and hide potential spoilers
[Show spoiler]I would say there is a commonality between time travel films which breeds familiarity, but there is a little gem to this excercise. maybe a little lucky I got to see this before interstellar, because of concept of time, but such enthralling acting from the leads draws you into their cause.
a solid 4.5/5 for me.

Do you remember the part towards the end when
[Show spoiler]Temporal Agent Hawke takes the baby back to 1945? Isn't that baby the offspring of 1960s Hawke (Snook) and 1970s Hawke (post-op Snook)? That didn't make sense to me. How can the original Hawke exist in the first place if he is only the product of a time travel union? That is putting the cart before the horse, and doesn't seem to add up. A moment in time has to exist in an original form first before you would be able to change it through time travel.

I've seen it about a week ago and it was brilliant. A must for me on blu-ray. I will not spoil anything but I'll say this to who's willing to try something different: it's worth it.

P.S: It reminds me of Triangle (which was also good).

Really liked Daybreakers and I've read some pretty good reviews about this one so I think I'm gonna add it very soon to my blu-ray collection (the release is scheduled for December 1st in France and the price is ridiculous).

Via a "blink and you'll miss it" visit to our cinema's. lasted 1 - 2 weeks, it had little to no advertising. save for promotion on FB. may be a test release???.

[Show spoiler] sorry bud, have little recollection save for the fact that the whole process was about being chronological sterile from any family member, not to be born of family but of self IIRC. I'd assumed it was largely a responsibility of the "time department" to set things straight, Im seriously waiting for a blu-ray release. It was a real mind bender, and such a strong movie with perhaps the involvement of 2 people for the most part.

This is fantastic and i really recommend it to any fan of serious science fiction and/ or time travel stories. Sarah Snook is a revelation and Hawke is his usual fantastic self.

This movie would have been great if all of its plot twists would not have been so easily guessable from about 20 minutes in and this is a film where the plot is entirely reliant on twists.
[Show spoiler] If you have a story about time travel and introduce both a face-transplant and a character who is intersex and can change gender early on, it's really not that difficult to figure it all out.
The weird thing is that the movie then still attempts to spring them on the audience as surprises, especially the last one which had already been made explicit half an hour before, for those who didn't guess this early on.

There are some fun aspects to the film, best of all the alternative 60s with
[Show spoiler]brawling lady student astronauts in 2001-style helmets and A-line dresses
and the lead actress is pretty good in a difficult role but ultimately an attempt at a mindf*** film which is so predictable doesn't really work for me.

I guess I'm one of the few the didn't think about the movie much until after it was over. All the twists were surprises to me. It was a very enjoyable film and had me thinking about the predestination paradox that this film is based around.

[Show spoiler]Can someone explain to me how Ethan Hawke's character forgot about his past? Shouldn't he have known that he was Jane the entire time? If I get this correctly, the future John knew that he was going to be talking to his past self. Is that why he received 2 guns from the Temporal Agents in the future because they knew he was going to meet himself?

Also, I can't wrap my head around the ending. Was the ending a change in time because he killed himself preventing the fizzle bomber or did killing his future self mean he would become the fizzle bomber in time?

Of course, all these answer would probably be answered watching it a second time.

Yeah, much of the plot doesn't seem to add up, but I give them points for effort...time travel is tricky.

[Show spoiler]Hawke knew he was Jane the whole time...remember they went to the 1960s and 70s Jane pointed the gun at him when he was on the bench and Hawke said something like "Remember I love her too." From what I gather, the whole point of Hawke approaching Jane in the bar was to ensure that his future self happens and he becomes a time cop to stop the Fizzle Bomber.

However, Hawke did not know he was to become the Fizzle Bomber. He never saw his face and their meeting had never happened up until that point. He could have easily stopped the Fizzle Bomber by shooting himself as soon as finding out he was the Fizzle Bomber, a la Looper. The whole theme of the movie is "predestination" and the notion that things with happen even if you try to change them...he will probably become the Fizzle Bomber anyway (remember that to much travel causes insanity in the film). But that is why they ended the film there...to let the viewer contemplate if all he did was in vain.

The part that really did not make sense to me was the part of him bringing his baby, inbred self back to 1945...see my previous comment.

Default Avoid reading the story if you haven't seen the movie!

For those of us that haven't seen the movie yet, I'd strongly recommend not reading the short story it's based on, "All you Zombies -" by Robert A. Heinlein! I couldn't resist, and now I'm pretty sure I know the plot twist

On the other hand, it's a great story!

can any confirm if this timeline is correct lol?

[Show spoiler]she has a baby with herself (Hawke from future), she has baby, doctor removes her organs, and is now a man and cant have a baby as a woman....she delivers baby, Hawke from future steals baby and brings it to the orphanage but the baby turns out to be hawke the whole time?? wtf?

Time travel is the least of the challenge. Make sure your mind is ready before going in.
