Default IN DEVELOPMENT: "Mallrats"

http://www.indiewire.com/2016/06/kev...es-1201687438/

There are few things Kevin Smith loves more than hinting at the expansion of his various cinematic universe – from the world of “Yoga Hosers” to “Clerks” and even a seemingly burgeoning “Hit Somebody” franchise – and now it looks like the indie auteur is about to push one of his trademark hits into a whole different medium: Television.

During an radio appearance this morning on Philadelphia radio station 93.3 WMMR, Smith announced that his long-teased sequel to “Mallrats” will now be a ten-episode television series. Details are otherwise slim, but Smith has often hinted at his interest in revisiting the world of mallrating, and television will certainly offer up a chance to explore it even further.

I'd be surprised if Hit Somebody ever got made. Michael Dowse and Jay Baruchel already beat him to the game with Goon (and Goon: Last of the Enforcers, which seems to be taking forever to come out).

As for the Mallrats series, Jason Lee must return.

A Mallrats TV show hmm, malls are going the way of drive in movies. Are malls even relevant to kids these days?

I live close to a reasonably big mall and it's still filled with kids. However, I don't know if they are regular hang out spots like I used them as in the 90s. Back then it was common to see a bunch of kids my age spend nearly an entire weekend in the mall's arcade playing video games and also hanging out in the record, video game, and hat stores. I used to go so often to all of said stores in the mall as a kid that I knew many of the employees by name and used to regularly strike up conversations with them. But today's much different as younger folks are living in a fast paced social media bubble. I can't imagine younger guys in particular being "mallrats" with the decline of arcades and record stores to occupy their time and interests.

No. At least, not like it used to be. Back in the 80s and 90s (as Mallrats actually showed) there were multiple malls in a city/town that were in short driving distance from each other. Nowadays there will be one crowded mall and several ghost towns.

I think it could be interesting, especially if the show focuses on how malls are fading out and can even become crime-ridden. This show could be good if it's on Netflix/Showtime/HBO. If it ends up on Comedy Central, TBS, MTV, or other basic cable channels, it'll probably die a slow death over like 2-3 seasons. If they pitch this to network television, it's going to be canceled before it even gets off its feet.

I was hoping more for a movie but I will take a TV series.

It would have to not be on any pay extra channel like those for me as I can't afford more than I already have for TV. So I will miss out on the episodes until Blu-Ray if that even happens for it.

From what I've read, the plot of the sequel was planned to be centered around this fact.

That could be interesting if they did it right with that in mind. One of the half vacant dying malls that half the people in them are elderly walking for exercise. Jay and Bob type guys hustling and all absurdities that might come with all of it.

I'll take a TV series. I'm actually more intrigued in the idea. The only apprehension I get about it is the unlikelihood of getting some of the original cast back. I will probably be wrong about that.

I'll be happy to see it in any form.

I doubt the TV show would need them or at least much of them but
alot of them were his friends and most of them don't seem to have tons going on. Of the main 4 from the movie:
Lee is the most busy but is well versed doing TV.
London could use the work.
Doherty isn't super busy and has done alot of TV.
Forlani also has been doing TV appearances.
When they were talking about a Mallrats sequel I think the vast majority signed up.

I just don't believe that honestly. I can't see Netflix or anyone passing this up. It had to have had a TERRIBLE pitch to not even get a streaming service interested. Especially since it was supposed to be a one season mini-series last time I heard about it.
