I live close to a reasonably big mall and it's still filled with kids. However, I don't know if they are regular hang out spots like I used them as in the 90s. Back then it was common to see a bunch of kids my age spend nearly an entire weekend in the mall's arcade playing video games and also hanging out in the record, video game, and hat stores. I used to go so often to all of said stores in the mall as a kid that I knew many of the employees by name and used to regularly strike up conversations with them. But today's much different as younger folks are living in a fast paced social media bubble. I can't imagine younger guys in particular being "mallrats" with the decline of arcades and record stores to occupy their time and interests.

I think it could be interesting, especially if the show focuses on how malls are fading out and can even become crime-ridden. This show could be good if it's on Netflix/Showtime/HBO. If it ends up on Comedy Central, TBS, MTV, or other basic cable channels, it'll probably die a slow death over like 2-3 seasons. If they pitch this to network television, it's going to be canceled before it even gets off its feet. |
