Default Yamaha RX-V1800+PS3?

Hey guys Happy holidays first off, but to get to the point and i am not sure if someone has posted this I am sorry if it has been posted. Ah I just got my RX-V1800 And i seem to have a problem I do not get any Dolby True Hd decoding out of it. I was just wondering if it was my amp itself or my ps3. So here is the set up,
Hdmi from ps3 to amp, put in 300 witch has Dolby True, set up the sound for DTHD have the ps3 set to LPCM, Nothing.... So i set it to Bitstream I get DD but no DTHD so what might I be doing wrong? Could anyone help me it would really be awesome cause it is very frustrating.. Also i have the Ps3 set to output everything through HDMI if that helps. Also on topic i guess Does anyone know if the new firmware gave us DTS hd master or no? that would be awesome.

Thanks a bunch Mitch

with ps3 set to Linear PCM, select the Dolby TrueHD audio track...hit the "display" button on the BD remote.

you'll see TrueHD is playing.

The PS3 can only internally decode Dolby TrueHD internally and send it to the Receiver via Linear PCM.

The PS3 does not yet decode DTS-HD MA. Word is that it will by christmas...am doubting it now.

The PS3 cannot output high resolution audio via bitstream, so for those formats you will need to leave the PS3 set on Linear PCM. (your Receiver should display "Multichannel" or something to that extent)

but you can toggle back and forth between Bitstream and Linear PCM when needed. During a movie...hit the triangle button and go to AV Settings

If you want the Receiver to display "Dolby TrueHD" and "DTS-HD MASTER" you would have to buy a bluray player that can bitstream HD audio (PS3 can only decode into LPCM)

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 can bitstream.

Yeah I have a RXV1800 and a PS3 myself. I think I might get a standalone player that can bitstream it, so that DTS HD MA light on the receiver comes up. It's so big too. Covers up the whole bottom corner. I don't even know if the PS3 will have a firmware that supports DTS HD MA in the future. Should I wait? Or get a standalone?

well I believe the PS3 will have internal decoding of Dts-HD MA (into LPCM) soon enough, but it will never bitstream it...so if your waiting on bitstream capability, I don't think it will happen.

Well thanks a lot! that helps me out i just thought i was getting nothing.. All the amp says is PCM so that is just cause it is getting the signal just processed by the ps3 and shot out in LPCM. Humm do you know if there is a difference? I am sure there is, Thanks again I am gonna have to look into a BD player now for sure.. I did not want to use the PS3 for that but it defiantly help me get into blu-rays haha so that is a plus.

Default Is there a difference in quality b/tw Bitstream & Linear PCM

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm having the exact same problem with the same equipment (RX-V1800 & PS3). Being that the only way to listen to Dolby True HD is through PCM, is there any loss in sound quality? What's the difference quality wise, if any, between Dolby True HD Bitstreamed VS Linear PCM?

I read the little bit of speculation here regarding a firmware update to add DTS HD but how realistic do you guys think it is that it will happen? Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Theoretically there is no difference between LPCM and Bitstream. Others on here say they think there is a difference...but I beleive its more like a placebo affect...similar to those who think Monster HDMI cables give you a better picture. (there is no easy way to properly compare the two... some equipment adjustments and also some blind testing would need to be conducted...and I highly doubt anyone has done this correctly.)

I believe they will allow Dts-HD Master internal decoding in the near future. When? your guess is as good as mine.

Default Thanks a lot- one more thing...

Thanks for such a quick reply. The only other question I have is whether I'm losing out on any sound quality by going with the PS3 over a standalone player. My dad just got a 1080P TV and wanted to get a Blu Ray player and I steered him toward the PS3 because of all the other features but he would be upset to find out that he's sacrificing sound quality for the other features. How does the PS3's sound quality stack up against the comparably priced competition?

Thanks again for all your help!

well, its more of a personal preference on what sounds good or not. Even Transformers with standard Dolby Digital scored perfect in the audio department, so sound quality can still be good no matter what you listen to. The PS3 has excellent audio capabilites, as do all Bluray Players. Its just that some players output differently. The PS3 can only output Lossless audio via HDMI (Linear PCM). While other players have the ability to output HDMI (LPCM or Bitstream) or Multichannel Analog. Some players can only internally decode Lossless while others can only Bitstream it. So like I said, its mostly personal preference...but they ALL sound good.

Does your dad have a Receiver? This is probably the most important question.
