Default 7.1 surround...

okay, so if a movie such as hairspary only has 7.1 DTS Master audio and my reciever only does 6.1 or 5.1 DTS will it make it work with the 5.1 or 6.1 and still sound proper even though the movie is encoded in 7.1? I am not sure how this works.

Default yes it will

most movies are encoded in 5.1 the 7.1 sound is extra fillin for use in very big theaters where there was some times hole in rear surround in some seating in large venues you will often see 5 or 6 speakers at back for surround in most normal houses it is not practical to have four rear surrounds plus rear sub on really big systems you have two subwoofers 4 rear surrounds and 7 front speakers but you need large custom theater room and massive screen the extra surrounds can make difference but in normal rooms your amp will mix extra surround information with rear surround and feed it to your two rears and sound really good

It should sound completely fine. The nice thing for those with 7.1 speakers is that the 7.1 discrete audio does not "steal" information from the right and left surrounds to create the rear channel sounds. If you've ever paid attention to your right and lefts when you apply matrix decoding for the rear surrounds, they definitely lose intensity, and it becomes emphasized in the rear channels (at least with DDEX and DD ProLogic IIx).
