I have been lurking and asking everyone's openion and I guess it really comes down to what i can afford, prefer, etc. I figured I would ask if those of you are enjoying your BD experience without a receiver and surround sound? I have an old receiver and older speakers and will probably just enjoy the PS3 that i will purchase without sound for the time being. Is anyone else doing that?

I don't have a Blu-ray player in my room, because if I want to watch a movie I want the surround sound. Too bad my wife will not allow me to put a 5.1 system in our bedroom. ![]() |

and at night I even use Sennheiser Rs110 900 Mhz Wireless Rf Headphones so I can still hear the movie and not keep the wife up. Sound is great!

I have a Sony BDS300 in my bedroom hooked up to a Vizio 32" where we use just the TV speakers. It looks GREAT... sounds is actually quite good.
Best bet, if it's in the budget, is to buy a basic $300 HTIB, and work your way up. Get a receiver that can handle HD-quality audio... then buy front/center speakers, then rears. That's my suggestion. The advice is worth what you paid for it. |

just how do you have a 7.1 system hooked up to work when the ps3 can't even decode dts-hd master audio?

This is probably not the intent of the question, but I have a 3.1 channel set-up. No surrounds (yet). But, here's something to note. I spoke with a rep from a specialty hi-fi store and asked if I should buy the relatively cheaper mains and use those as my rears or buy the more expensive surrounds.
He actually talked me down to the cheaper mains! He said 90% of the sound in a 5.1 system come out of your mains and center channel (about 85% in a 7.1). Given that 10% - 15% can make the difference between a very good and great system is the surrounds, you shouldn't have to go all out - (that's what the rep told me who's been in audio for 20+ years). Just a consideration for those who are building your system - put your speaker budget into the mains and center channel. |
