Default Xbox One S questions from a PS3er

My 2008 40gb PS3 is dying. It’s been a real champ. I’m thinking about replacing it with an Xbox One S. I don’t currently have a 4K tv as I’m still in love with panny plasma. Will the Xbox One S work with my Harmony One remote? I would use the 1S as a stand-alone console without feeding my components through it. Also, Is the BD player onboard the 1S a good one?

You don’t need a 4k tv for the X1 to work it will work on any HD tv. Plus yes the Bluray drive works great . It’s worth buying.

S is a great unit. Scorpio is a step up in most cases but imo its overkill for what is available right now. Ill wait for the cost to come down to a reasonable amount.

I own a Harmony, and it does work with the XBone.

Coming from a PS3, the XBone's Blu-ray & DVD app will leave you underwhelmed and disappointed. Having owned both the original XBone and the XBone S (Gears of War Edition) - I can honestly tell you that it is utter garbage, and will cause you more frustration than it will bring you entertainment. The app currently has a 2/5 star rating with 556 reviews, just to give you an idea of how people feel about it. So while the actual physical Blu-ray drive is fine, I will still suggest you steer clear from making this your "one stop" unit, and urge you to invest a few more bucks into a simple Blu-ray player like the Sony BDPS-3700.

That said, other than the Blu-ray & DVD app being shitty and a few minor gripes aside, the Xbox One S is great. It's incredibly user friendly and comes with a fantastic controller. It also doesn't need a 4K TV, but offers a number of UDH & HDR related features for when you inevitably upgrade down the road.

You can go to the store right now and get a 500GB Xbone S & Forza Horizon 3 + FH3 Hotwheels for $279.99. That's a damn steal, imo.

Also, Amazon is including a free copy of Rainbow Six: Siege with the purchase of a 6 month Xbox Live Gold card.

Autumn, since you had both I’m assuming you’re still running the S? I only ask because I did some searching and people seemed to have issues with the S but not the original.

I ordered an Xbox1S. I was hoping to make it my primary BD player and am disappointed with the reviews of the BD/DVD app. If it does not perform to my liking I will also purchase a stand-alone BD player. With so many complaints about this, why hasnt Microsoft done anything to fix it? It’s all software right?

I'm using the S, while the lady of the house is using the original. Since our 5 year old BDPS-790 crapped out we've tried to watch Blu-ray on both models several times before giving up on them. She's now using her PS4 and I picked up a Sony BDPS6700 along with a multi-region BDPS 1700.

We own two of every major console going all the way back to the NES....

Yep, it is just the software that's the issue. I don't know why MS hasn't improved on it, but I don't see it changing any time soon.

Good call on the purchase, though. I'm certain you'll be happy with everything else.

Well after more and more research I cancelled my order. Thank you all for helping me Decide whether or not I want an Xbox one. I believe I don’t as I will be disappointed in its reliability as a BD player. If someone can delete this thread that would be OK with me.

That's unfortunate, but understandable. While it's a great console that's no better or worse than a standard PS4 in regards to the gaming side of things, it simply lacks several features that make the PS4 a more convenient "one and done" machine. I own and love both, but if I were to go without a Blu-ray player and just the one console, I would definitely go with Sony.

I use my Xbox One to watch blu-rays often and can't say I've really noticed anything bad about it. I actually prefer it over my PS4 because I can hook up my headphones at night and watch movies with the Dolby Atmos virtual surround sound. Unfortunately Sony decided to forgo the 4K blu-ray player so if you want a console with one you are limited to the Xbox.

The XBox isn't an Oppo by any means, but it is a competent BD player. I do think standard BDs look slightly better on my PS4 on my LG E6P, but it's most likely because of a black level setting or something. It used to stutter at times when playing UHDs but I haven't noticed that happening in a while. They do constantly update the software.

I typically just use my 1S for UHDs, PS4 for BDs, and TV for streaming. I don't own a stand alone player because I feel like that would be a waste considering almost everything connected to it already does.
