Hello to all forum members. I'd like to know your opinion regarding an issue I noticed yesterday while watching Passengers.
At the begining of the movie when the big asteroid impacts the shield of the Avalon, there's a scene where one can see a room full of crio pods where passengers sleep during their journey, at the impact time this room gets totally dark with just some small but bright lights from the pods. On my new one month old Samsung T.V. set, a 49'' mid price (800€) 4K HDR set, there were NO light bleeding on this scene. I went back and checked again, went back and paused the scene and nothing, just a plain black screen with no light bleeding from the pod's lights, zero, nada. This surprised me, my previous Philips SDR set, which sits upstairs now, has some light bleeding, all of my previous T.V. set suffered of this on some degree, it looks like the inexpensive Samsung doesn't. I think the panel may be an Edge Lit, but I'm not sure. On its specs the set mentioned something about micro dimming or local dimming, but I read sometime ago that Edge Lit panels are incompatible with this technology. I have no idea if this is true or not. My Samsung T.V. set is an European model with limited HDR specs, it looks fine for the price I paid for it either with HD, broadcast T.V. and 4K HDR, but it's not by no means the best set out there. What kind of panel technology according with what I just told you can it be using? Thanks in advance. |

Thank you! I'm not a sports fan, I sit right in front of it as this set is just for my use, and watch it in a fully dark room. It gets the job done.

LCD/LED TVs have come a long way. Even with edge lit TVs, there's a misconception that every single edge lit panel has light bleed and poor blacks. That couldn't be further from the truth. There's more variance from panel to panel than with other TVs, but believe it for not, not everyone experiences this. For example, I get great blacks and no light bleed 99.99% of the time even in a pitch dark environment. I use bias lights, mostly to alleviate eye strain and because 4K blu rays are mastered for 5 nits as opposed to viewing in complete darkness, but this also has the benefit of giving great blacks and reducing light bleed 100% of the time.

Assuming the KU6400 is basically the KU6300 with a different remote or whatever, it's not the best UHD television. Passengers is a Sony joint mastered with 4,000 nits. Could just be the lights are barely illuminated because of this deficiency.

Those lights on that scene on Passengers are small but rather bright, but there's no light bleed, zero.

I have another thread on this same forum regarding this set, a Sony UBP-X800 UHD BD player and Samsung's HDMI UHD Color which I had to set to ''Off'' so I can see the player's menus. Even when HDMI UHD Color off I'm getting HDR display, both T.V. set and Sony player OSD say so. If somebody wants to give me a hand with this and read it I'd truly appreciate it. |
