Default Will 1080p ever disappear?

With the fast rise of 4K UHD, will HD 1080 ever go extinct in the near future like VHS and then DVD did?

When did DVD go extinct? Isn't it still the best selling media?

I doubt it, for most people there's hardly any difference between 1080 & 4K. There's just not the massive leap as there was from SD to HD.
As @Blu Bull has said, DVDs are not going anywhere anytime soon which must mean some still prefer SD.

The 1080p content wont go extinct, but the 1080p screens will at some point not too far down the road. E.g. you can still go buy a new dvd, but buying a 50 inch 480p screen new? Good luck with that.

Yup, at the very latest when the sun blows up and the earth burns to a crisp. Honestly though, what a question. Of course 1080p will go the way of the dodo eventually, different formats and technologies keep replacing each other all the time. I grew up with a b&w cathode ray tv and I don't see many of them around now. 1080p will be around for quite a while but not for "ever"

Like others have said, 1080p screens might eventually, but 1080p content unlikely for a long time if ever. There's still tons of SD content with more every day. You obviviously haven't been in a store lately.

I mean I don't really buy DVDs anymore nowadays since Blu rays usually have combo packs with them, and buying the UV codes are so much cheaper. The last DVDs I bought were the original Star Wars trilogy because it included the theatrical editions, and they were on sale at FYE for buy 2 get one for a dollar. However, when I am not buying digital I buy Blu Ray because they have more special features most of the time.

There's tons of HD content being downgraded to SD on DVD. Just wish TV studios would wake up to the HD age we live in with 4K tv's.

Unfortunately, they want to feed us content via their streams, so they can charge us over and over and over again.

I'll grant you that, there isn't much new native SD content these days. But there's still a lot of old SD content available that will probably never be HD by the same token.

When I bought Ghost in the Shell last Tuesday there were two people behind me in line who were both buying newish release movies on DVD. They weren't even old, probably my age (mid-thirties).

A lot of my coworkers still only use Dvds, I routinely sell the ones from my combo packs to them. They range from 22-50. I'm watching my neighbors house right now, they have a DVD player and a VCR hooked up to a 720p TV, no bluray.

I think we forget sometimes that this forum is nowhere reflective of the general public and instead a small slice of enthusiasts.

A lot of people do, definitely. Sometimes we even exaggerate how much even members of this forum care about such things. There's tons of "why bother" type comments in remastered release threads, there's lot of crazy settings people say they use, etc. etc.

I want Game of Thrones in 4K.

To answer your question 1080p content will disappear. Although DVD first appeared in 1995 that's 22 years. Blu-ray first appeared in 2006 if you added the 22 DVD's have been around that's 2028.

Extinct from our little AV community. Are there any threads discussing brand new releases on DVD? Or when was the last time there was a thread about a DVD (non bluray) player?
If you go unto the sell/trade threads, how many are offering DVDs for sale or trade
