Exclamation PS3 wins the game console war!

Quote:
GamePro put on a mock PS3 vs. 360 vs. Wii console war on paper for the sake of enjoyable discussion. The safe-bet supreme guestimate? Sony's big black box, the PS3. All three consoles were judged against the following: speed/power, graphics, storage, best controller, online support, media functionality, game library (talk about subjective criteria), and overall value. The PS3 took four categorical wins, followed by the Xbox 360 with three, and the Wii with two.

THE FINAL VERDICT:
PlayStation 3

In fact, Sony's stock was just downgraded while Nintendo is updating their quarter's projection by 20%.

As much as we could all make long term arguments and what not, the truth of the matter is: It's simply WAY too early to declare outright victors of any kind in the game console wars.

It's going to be a lot closer and nastier this time around which is a damned good thing for all of us. I want tight competition. I want better quality. I want lower prices as a result.

Read before asking why.... "as far as playability and sales" not graphics. I'm getting a PS3 on launch day. I don't plan on getting a Wii. All i'm saying is the Wii is no slouch and will do just fine this holiday season.

It's all over on the radio today, the PS3 preorders are sold out at our local Gamestop. They're mentioning it so that people stop giving the GS employees grief over the limited availability.

I'll add that a guy and a gal who have a local radio talkshow were wondering why on earth the PS3 is so expensive. They were reading the information about what formats it plays and specifically mentioned SACD and BD-ROM. Unfortunately neither of them knew what these were and so they continued to question why the price was so high. Just goes to show that the common person still doesn't have a clue what Blu-ray is. I hope the people who actually buy these consoles can figure out what a BD-ROM is.

Judging the Wii by a screenshot shows you don't understand Nintendo's philosophy behind the Wii. The graphics are supposed to be simple. The real draw is the controller. With their unique controller, Nintendo is trying to bring in a new demographic of game players who would normally ignore a traditional console like the PS3 or Xbox 360. Think they're crazy? Just look at how well the DS is doing. Also, the third party developer support for Wii is particularly strong, which is something that's been lacking on Nintendo consoles since the N64. So the Wii is definitely not going to be a pushover this November, especially with the 4 million or so units Nintendo intends to have available by then. Anyway, I plan to get both a PS3 and a Wii eventually, so it's really a win-win situation for me.

How does the PS3 ultimately win the game console war?

Simple: Continue to do all the right things they did during the PS2 era and try and eliminate any of the shortcomings.

Where else are you going to play games like God of War, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, etc. etc.?

Really, it's still Sony's game to lose even though they made the mistake of giving Microsoft a year's head start with the 360.

I've been dismayed with some of their obvious arrogance and I hope they've been coming back down to Earth recently, because they do have a real fight on their hands this time.

Speaking just for myself: The 360 is now on probation in my house.

It's been glitchy and I've been living with some strange errors like random "unreadable discs" happening to me in games and then it crashes (reminds me of my HD-DVD experience.)

So...I know all the big multiplatform games will be on PS3 and frankly, except for maybe Gears of War and Halo 3...there really aren't a lot of exclusives on the 360 that I care about that I can't get on the PC or the PS3 anyways.

The only reason I'm keeping the 360 even now are for two games:

RAW vs. Smackdown 2007

(I am really annoyed that this got cancelled for PS3. I had full intentions of buying this as one of my PS3 launch titles.)

Here's why it happened:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/720/720579p1.html

2.) NCAA Football 2007.

Madden hasn't done much for me on the next gen consoles. I just prefer this game and like it a lot more just like I prefer college sports over pro sports, in general, especially with football. (Although I like pro well enough.)

So basically it's those games and jury being out on Gears of War - which I know will come to the PC eventually and I'd prefer to play something like this with a mouse and keyboard and Halo 3. <- This could be awesome but again, I prefer playing my shooters with a mouse and keyboard.

So you can see where the 360 starts running out of gas for me, especially since I'm primarily a PC gamer and the PS3 is going to be better in every respect on the console front.

YMMV

I'm going to wait a while on the Wii and here's why:

Forgetting the HD and the Dolby Digital stuff for a while, it's going to come down to this: I need to see the Wii enjoy far more support than the GC and N64 before it.

I know the new Zelda game will be awesome, and I know most, if not all, the first party Nintendo software will be good-great, but I just don't have a fire under my butt to rush out and place a preorder for one.

IMO: There's no point in buying a Wii for anything except first party Nintendo software...which is usually what people buy their systems for.
