Default PS3 DVD Upscaling

How do you rate the DVD upscaling ability of the PS3?

Do you think it would be worth buying a more expensive DVD upscaler to watch movies not yet out on Blu-Ray?

i've never seen other upscalers, so can't judge it relative to those, but would say i see a definite upscale in picture although nowhere near BD quality. i do use "double scale" as that consenses the picture to what seems to be the best resolution...anyone else do this?

I have always thought my Oppo did a better job. The picture with the PS3 is "softer" than the Oppo. In upscaling, I really think it depends on the TV that you have. My Oppo (971h) does a much better job on a 1080i CRT than my 1080p LCD. A co-worker has the 981hd with a 1080p dlp and he loves it.

Unless you can compare them side by side, don't go spend your money right now. (I know that statement is contrary to above, but I am not sure that it makes sense to spend another $200 on an upconverting DVD. Get a better receiver. )

to be honest I dont see a huge diferance between my standard DVD with component and my PS3 HDMI for upscaling, but I suspect that because my TV is upscaling the picture as it receives the component signal. I have a Toshiba and its really good at upscaling the built in DTV is amazing.

I've only done the comparison between Progressive Scan output (over component) & the HDTV's upscaler versus the PS3 upscaler (over HDMI). I've done this on a Westinghouse 37" 1080P LCD and a Sony 42" 1080P LCD, and in both cases the PS3 upscaler is much better than the TV's upscaler.

Unless you have loads of cash, even that, the SD DVD upscaled is not equivalent to a BD. So for the same money, I might as well spend the money replacing my movie library and leaving the upscale job to PS3 for just a wee-bit longer.

I'm not really buying too much into DVD upscaling right now... it's not really worth it in the end. Sure, it looks better, but not *that* much.

My parents recently bought a DVD upscaler to replace their rather broken DVD/VHS player (oddly enough, works on the same signal for the remotes!). Their TV is about 5 years old and only has a max of 1080i, hooked up through component. As I was changing the resolutions from 480i to 1080i, I took time to notice in a freeze frame what the quality difference was. Well, 480i was dark and diagonal lines were rather jagged. 480p was smoother, but still dark colours. Above that, all other resolutions had better colours, but the improvement in quality was nearly indistinguishable.

In the end, there may be improvement, but not enough to really care about trying to get the full HD out of DVD. 720i/p seems about as good as DVD can really get.

Just go Blu.

I have a Samsung HD850, I think my PS3 does a better job upscaling DVDs (both uses HDMI cables) They both look great that the difference is minimal to none, both will upscale to 1080i. On a side note, my Samsung's PQ suck when it was connected to component jack on 480p.

Your PS3 will work just as good as any dvd player that scales. The 'upscale' of the source is to just take it from 480P/i to your monitors native resolution. The problem with these 'upconverting' players is that as long as you have a monitor with at least 720p native rez or higher, they are not doing anything for you. Your monitors scaler is typically much better than most 'upconverting' scalers. Besides, if your dvd 'scales' the source, your monitor is also going to 'scale' the source to its native rez. A double scale is usually a bad combination.

I haven't really used another upscaling DVD player (my roommate has one, but my experience with that is very limited), but I think the PS3 upscaler does a very good job for most newer titles (such as Thank You For Smoking).

That said, there are some DVDs that just weren't meant for upscaling, like the Three's Company collections or a George Carlin set whose source material was shot in the 70s. You probably won't notice any difference at all between upscaled and native resolutions on those.
