Default Studios Could Be Moving Towards a $30 Premium VOD Service Early Next Year!!!

Quote:
Comcast, apple, and amazon are working on a delivery system to bring new release films home 30-45 days after they’ve been released for the cost of $30/rental. While that price tag may seem high, consider that if you were to go out to the theater to see a new movie, tickets can hover around $15, and the more people you bring over to your house to watch a new movie, the less the cost there is since everyone is pitching in (the person with the appletv or amazon account would pay, but then everyone else could just venmo the cost).

While $30 only 30-45 days isn’t as aggressive as studios might want—the studios would like $50 for a film that’s been out for only 17 days, a $30 price tag and a longer window could maybe sooth theater owners and also make for a more enticing prospect for consumers. It could also salvage box office for some films that didn’t demand people get out and come to the theater, but it could be good to invite some friends over and legally watch a new release movie.

Comcast, apple, and amazon are currently working out anti-piracy measures, and “a number of platforms, including the other major cable providers and digital players, will ultimately be a part of pvod as well, since the goal is to saturate the marketplace.” additionally, there will be some level of collaboration among pvod providers to agree to a $30 price plan, since that’s going to be the goal to avoid consumer confusion.

However, they still need to get the studios on board. They need at least three studios, and they’re already ruling out disney. Universal is the most likely to be involved since comcast is the studio’s parent company, so that leaves 20th century fox, warner bros., lionsgate, and paramount. “no one will come out of the gate unless the majority of the industry is involved,” one studio executive tells thr. “there is safety in numbers.”

It could be as soon as january or february of 2018, and they could have big holiday releases to offer like pitch perfect 3 and the greatest showman.

Reduce the price a tad bit, then we're talking.

I will still just wait for BD. VUDU looks great through my PS3 and PS4 but amazon streaming looks like a VHS dub. No way will I pay for that.

Feel free to kill movie theaters completely, while you're at it. Because this is the end if it passes.

MAYBE if it was day-and-date with theatrical they'd have some appeal. But if you don't feel the need to rush out and see a movie in the first couple weeks of release, you might as well wait a little longer and own the film permanently rather than rent it once for $30 or more. Hell, these days it only takes like 90 days for movies hit digital, blu, and dvd - some in as little as 60 days.

hahaha.... that's kind of a major hurdle to just throw out there in passing. Studios like this idea, but they also know they don't want to draw the ire of the theater chains which are still their bread and butter.

I still don't see this taking off, especially not for the major movies that people will still want to see on the big screen. But $30 is kinda reasonable, especially if you split it with one or two other people (or if it's for a family).

So they want people to pirate stuff from it right away? Because that's what will happen if it passes. People will find a way to download it and upload it online.

As much as I'm against it, cause it will kill theatres -slowly, but for sure- in time, this is the future. It will happen. No doubt. Netflix and stuff were also the ones that were "never going to happen", few years later, everyone has it. Only question is : When? And how many will fail first to launch this? I think the price is OK. It will go down in time, as always. But 30€ ? That's 4 movies on my own in theatres today. Unlimited at home.

EDIT : I misunderstood the price, I missed that it was for 1 movie only. Yeah, that's just nuts!

I still think the price is a joke. Sure, it's appealing if you have a family or group of friends that all want to watch. But what about movies I will watch alone? Why should one person have to pay $30 to watch a movie just because they want to set the price assuming others might be having viewing parties?

This would have to go $10 or less before I would ever consider renting a movie at home, and even then only if it was much earlier. I won't even pay the $7-8 they want for direct-to-VOD movies in their exclusive window.

They set it that price cause they know some people who will see it alone would likely pay the price if they want to see it bad enough,

Exactly. They just never learn. No matter what kind of copy protection they come up with, someone's gonna hack the system within a few weeks. And then when perfect digital copies start showing up on the net for free within a few hours of a big movie being released, no one will want to pay thirty bucks for it.

I don't understand why so many are intent on getting rid of the theaters for.

There was another topic that discussed an article with this same price point, and I'll reiterate my stance on the matter:

I will not pay purchase prices for a rental. I won't even pay that much for a digital download when it's a keeper. $15 is my maximum for non-TV digital purchase prices, with a few exceptions (like when I was out of the country for a film I missed back home).

I haven't had theater prices driven to the point where an insane VOD cost would be justified, though Avarice Movie Chain did just buy up our cinemas. If they skyrocket them out of control, I'll just drive to State College out of protest.

I am not interested in this since I got my MoviePass. I'll be going to the movies every day. It's not like the service is going anywhere. *cough*

I will always love the movie theater experience so no thanks. Not in that much of a hurry to "rent" a movie. I'll just wait the 3-4 months and buy the 4k disc.

Price is a bit steep, but understandable.

A better way is to have a membership fee ( however much that may be).

The idea is great for me. My HT beats going to the movies for sure.

I'm not sure how I feel about the price, but I could see paying it every once in a while.

You're crazy. Don't help with the decline of cinema.

Soon everyone will be watching films on their iPhones with so many inch screens. Not even being able to see whats going on. The screen is so small.

LOL

No chance in Hell, buddy.

1. I'm a single man, going to movies by myself. I only pay for my own tickets. I never buy food.

2. I don't want to watch movies at my house. I love going to the theater. Why would I pay MORE money to see a movie at home?

3. Even if this were available same day as theaters, no way. But waiting 1-2 months? LOL. If I'm waiting that long, might as well just wait another couple weeks for a $2 rental at RedBox.

This is ridiculous.
