Question Sensio 3-D DVDs - is there any chance we will see these on 3D Blu-ray?

I'm aware there are a number of Sensio 3-D DVD's floating around (presented in SBS I think). Seeing as Sensio went bust a while ago I got to wondering who now owns the license/distribution rights? Would there be any chance at all we might get 3DFA to work their magic and get these on 3-D Blu-ray? Sensio released some fun titles with some decent pop-out effects, rollercoaster-type rides and amusing story-lines.

I believe some care would need to be taken. Many of the Sensio type (Field Sequential System) stuff were pirated.

I'm assuming he's talking about the official Sensio DVDs that you could buy, not the pirated SBS versions ripped from the Sensio DVDs. He's talking about the actual licensed titles that they released on the system, and how likely it is that the 3DFA could get some of that stuff.

Yes, that's correct. I don't care for the pirated stuff - it's the official Sensio 3-D DVD releases that interest me.

Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Sensio DVD's are not SBS (side by side). They are a "field sequential" system that uses shutter glasses and usually limited to using with a CRT. I have several Sensio DVD's some of which are legit and some of which are pirates. They all work on the same system. Whereas my only SBS (FT13th 3) works on a completely different viewing system.

The problem of using even legitimate Sensio DVD's to convert to 3D Blu-ray is you start with the very low resolution of 240 by 720 and end up having a very large up conversion to 1080 by 1920. That's a factor of 12X which would result in a very poor image.

No, Sensio DVDs are side-by-side 3D. Completely different system from field sequential. Sensio is a company.

I've got a field-sequential DVD of that. It's an official release. I found it for a couple dollars in a local thrift store many years ago of all places!

I wonder if the original source material is accessible? That must’ve been rendered at a decent resolution and allow for a higher quality 3-D Blu-ray master? I wonder who owns that?

Bob F (or Greg) - can you shed any light on current status of the Sensio assets please?

Well again, the OP is not talking about converting Sensio DVDs to blu-ray. He's talking about the possibility of 3DFA getting access to the titles Sensio had, as they no longer have the licenses. In other words, releasing proper remastered releases of the Sensio titles on 3D blu-ray.

Almost all of Sensio's feature 3-D releases (IMAX, Hollywood titles) were licences vs assets, as in I don't believe the company owned any of their main feature releases. And those licences are almost sure to all be expired by now.

Some have since been released in 3-D bluray from newer elements (Jaws 3-D, Spy Kids 3-D, Bugs!, etc..) directly from Universal, Disney, etc..

As for those titles that haven't been released on 3-D bluray yet, what assets are available? Remember that Sensio's earlier proprietary checkerboard hSBS system was primarily 4x3 based and in standard def, vs the later 16x9 based hSBS system as used on 3DTVs and projectors and paytv 3D systems, in either HD 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The official 3-D bluray format offers the cleanest home 3-D experience, at a full 1920x1080 per eye.

Sensio offered their 3-D DVDs sometimes in two different 3-D formats, their Sensio system as roughly described above, and also in field-sequential 3-D. Both systems are either half or very close to being half resolution PAL or NTSC. Meaning, there's no guarantee that even the source material used for these discs were in high definition, or acceptable by today's standards.

Given the above variables, I would say most of the previous Sensio titles have as much luck as any other 3-D titles that are not currently available. (*)

(*) Well... the nwave titles previously released on 3D DVD did have a limited theatrical run in Real-D and also saw hSBS runs on Comast's 3-D channel back in 2012, so those could possibly have a better shot.

I’ll be honest, we’ve got enough vintage feature projects in the pipeline for the next couple of years and these are VERY low on the priority scale...

Thanks guys. I thought maybe they’d be a fun addition to a future 3-D compilation than individual releases. It would be interesting to know if you manage to locate any of the original source material - and what format/resolution it’s in. Cheers.

Greg's words about Sensio using 2 formats, one being SBS, and the other being Field Sequential, explains our conflicting opinions earlier. But I'm still willing, BO11, to "stand corrected".(LOL)
