That article also mentions that most manufacturer's believe there will be a hybrid player available in "early 2007."

Woo-hoo! Me want bad!

Default They are perpairing for the end

I can see them working on something like that b/c there will be close to a million Blu-ray players out before the end of the year.

They have to make something that allows people to play those old HD DVD discs

Well not really. They, like other companies, find that it's easier to attack the whole market by making a chipset for both. If they only need to add a bit more logic to their chipsets for both they increase the size of their whole pie. The article I read stated that many companies like Amtel and other do this. They don't necessarily mean for hybrid players to be made but rather they have a universal part that can be manufactured in quantity lowering pricing.

While NEC Electronics announced BD/HD DVD chipset, Sony NEC Optiarc, which is a merged company combined two optical drive divisions from Sony and NEC and is the only company supplying its HD DVD drives for Toshiba HD DVD player/recorder so far, just revealed that they gave up manufacturing HD DVD drive and will focus BD drive only.
