Default NEC to do Blu-ray Only?

Touted as a big backer of the HD DVD format, NEC is selling a water-cooled Blu-ray PC now. It is pretty expensive, but I guess it includes the monitor, surround sound speakers, etc. Anyways, I have yet to see NEC jump into the HD DVD fray, so does this mean they've had a change in plans to go Blu-ray exclusively? Regardless, this is yet another CE company joining the very large Blu-ray wave...

Oct 04, 2006NEC to Sell Water-Cooled PC With Blu-ray Drive
OCT 04, 2006 07:57:23 AM | Add Comment (0) | Permalink

Japanese users won’t have to worry about a noisy cooling fan disturbing them while they watch high-definition movies on NEC’s newest computer. The PC, equipped with a Blu-ray drive, uses water-cooling instead.

A prototype of the PC, called the Valuestar X VX780/GD, was on display this week at the Ceatec exhibition in Chiba, Japan.

As most Japanese live in small apartments, PCs often do double-duty as both a computer and an entertainment system. But the use of cooling fans means that PCs are not as quiet as standalone DVD players, often interrupting the movie-watching experience. The use of water-cooling means NEC’s Valuestar X runs quietly, making just 31 decibels of noise, or slightly more than a whisper.

Priced at 543,000 yen (US$4,612), the PC is clearly not intended for people on a budget. But for those willing to pay more for a high-end system, the Valuestar X, which is due to go on sale in December and runs Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition operating system, offers some impressive features.

In addition to the Blu-ray drive and water-cooling system, the PC offers a digital television tuner, a 3.4GHz Intel Pentium D 945 processor, 1GB of RAM, and dual 250GB hard drives. It also includes a remote control and a 20-inch widescreen liquid crystal display (LCD) with internal flat-panel NXT speakers that provide surround sound.

Wow, the two basic companies running HD DVD were Toshiba and NEC. This is big news!

This is about the same news as Samsung doing an HD DVD laptop. Maybe just a little weirder

NEC makes the drive in the HD-A1. You seriously did not know this? Perhaps it's time to lay the Pom Poms down and expand your horizons just a bit. You're too focused on exclusivity which is going the way of the Dodo. Companies exist to make a profit that is the only exclusive common denominator.

Don't hate da playa, hate da game...which obviously HD DVD is losing.

Nope, can't say I knew NEC made the drive in the HD-A1,...I even googled it and haven't found anything regarding this supposed fact. Link please? I figured Toshiba made their own drives, don't know where I got that CRAZY idea.

"Exclusivity which is going the way of the Dodo"--hmm, it is? What recent companies (of any significant relevance) have jumped on the HD DVD bandwagon?...the only one I've seen is the Samsung laptop which is a far cry from all-out supporting the HD DVD format. So, other than that what companies?...What studios?...ahh, huh, precisely.

If you and HD DVD weren't smart enough to plan ahead, then doom on you.
Other Dodos: [chanting] Doom on you. Doom on you. Doom on you. Doom on...

Haha.

Yeah there is an NEC drive inside the Toshibas.

A real one - 5 1/4 bay half height drive. You can take it out and put it in a PC.

Something I might do if I can get a better HD DVD player one day...!

As noted this news is like one division of Samsung doing something different from another division.

That said it is pretty surprising that the only maker of HD DVD drives to date (NEC) has this kind of thing going on also.

I believe that Toshiba drives will be in the gen 2 products - I am sure HMurch will know

Sony and NEC merged their optical drive divisions in the beginning of this year... where Sony is the larger stock holder

They'll simply make some excuses and spin up for it.

I'd say this is fairly signifigant news, but not earth shattering.

Liteon will be making HD DVD drives soon and perhaps LG.

In the end it's a business and I don't expect any company that cares about making a profit and returning value to shareholders to let silly politics prevent them from seeing the larger picture.

It's too bad many on this Forum don't realize this or simply fail to acknowledge this 'fact' ! Glad you reminded all of us of this truth

Not a big deal, the fanboys are sold. The point is that companys will see where everyone is going and will drop HD DVD in the end.
There is no money in HD DVD for companys, only losses.

Huh? We all know that very well. We're just able to see past our noses and call it as such.
