Have to mostly agree with you. Apple is the most innovative company in the world. When they finally build a product with a Blu-ray player in it, it will say something to many other tech companies. We still have to wait and see what happens at MacWorld.

It would be nice if they came out with an Apple TV with a Blu-ray drive in it. Not likely as there is no optical drive in them now anyway, but still would be nice. I would definitely consider replacing my PS3 as my Blu-ray player if they did that.

Default Apple will ship computers with Blu-ray drives

Apple will throw its weight behind Blu-ray!

Quote:
In a report issued to clients early Thursday morning, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu cited sources who say the Cupertino-based Mac maker, which already occupies a seat on the Blu-ray consortium, is set to begin shipping some of its computers with support for the next-generation DVD format.

"We believe this is a key announcement as current Macs ship with the DVD format and Sony gains a strong ally in Blu-ray," the analyst told clients. He added that Disney, for which Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is a Director, is a firm supporter of Blu-ray, while rival Microsoft Corp. has placed most of its eggs in the HD-DVD basket.

However, Wu hedged his bets somewhat, saying there is "a smaller chance Apple may use a combo Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive to ensure full compatibility and not get involved in the format wars."

they are also rumored to be introducing:

an ultraportable laptop with an optional external optical drive.

a refresh to the AppleTV to include a TV tuner, blu-ray, TVR, and other features of the sort.

perhaps we will see an external blu-ray drive that can be used with the ultraportable and appletv. thats a stretch, but it fits with the current rumors.

Although this is NOT official... the Apple Insider does tend to be pretty accurate about these things.

Here's hoping! I can't wait to get a BD burner on my new mac purchase!

I doubt they will make a combo player. That would be WAY to pricey! It would add $1k on the price! The only real solution here is a BD burner. I just want to know WHICH computers will support BD. I want to get whatever has it as long as it isn't the tower... I can't afford that right now.

yes, I've already got the burner, just waiting for the software side :-)

I might sell my external burner and put it towards a new mac pro though....decisions decisions...

and by the way, Ive been on the macrumors forums all day debunking some dissappointed hd-dvd fans. some of the shit they say just gets my blood going, and I have been posting non stop schooling them on blu-ray.

I always thought it was obvious that Apple would start including Blu-Ray drivers (readers, at the very least) with their new lineup. They are on the Blu-Ray consortium, and they have close ties with Disney.

That being said, I doubt this will show up on the MacBook, and that's a bummer because that would push me over the edge to finally get one for my wife (she thinks they are neat). MacBrook Pro and the desktops only, I'm afraid (just my speculation).

Actually I am.
But I am a poor mac owner. My personal mac is 6+ years old now. It cost me 5k when I got it and I only just paid it off. Now I have to get a new one and can't afford one that pricey. So as a temporary computer until we can afford a better one, we are going to get a mac mini and hook it up to my HDTV.
I just hope the mac mini can have such an option.

I have been a mac user since 1989! Love them! I use them at work and at home.

I'm sure Apple will put in blu-ray only drive in thier computers, neutrality never won a war, besides Blu-ray is the 1 format that actually stands a chance of winning...
