There are a few things that Studios do that steers me on the side of madness (ok maybe a bit dramatic), but these are the things that truly piss me off (note: these can include disc, case, special edition packaging etc.):
1. When a movie franchise is inconsistent with packaging design This is the biggest one. I purchased the Fast and the Furious collection (1-4). All have a nicely numbered spine and are consistent in design. Then Fast Five comes out on Blu and the numbered spine and front cover layout is different, therefore lacks any consistency with the previous installments. 2. UK rating stickers I hate those horrible rating stickers (many of which are painted on) that plaster otherwise gorgeous packaging. I have passed on plenty of steelbooks with the fear that the sticker would be painted on. 3. Collectibles that have no place to store them once opened Specifically collector cards, film strips etc. that are included as a bonus, but have no pocket or pouch to put them so you can keep it with the actual case or packaging. Two that come to mind are Family Guy Blue Harvest and the Walking Dead Season 1 3-Disc collector set that included trading cards that fall out of the packaging. 4. TV sets that start as Volumes and then change to Seasons. The biggest culprit of this is the classic TMNT collection. The first 3 seasons were spread over like 5 volumes. 5. Steelbook/digibook release for one or two films in a series of films. I like to keep things neat and organized. That's why I hate when franchises will release a special edition for one film, but release the others in plain Amray case. The Matrix trilogy is the prime example. It has a Steelbook and a Digibook, but the sequels are only released as a two-pack. Say what you like about the quality of the sequels, but far worst films have gotten the steel/digibook treatment. What are your most hated things that are done with otherwise great Blu-Ray/DVD packages? Last edited by leburn98; 08-31-2012 at 05:29 PM. |

There's only one Blu-ray packaging that annoys me..... cardboard packaging with the discs in pockets. I don't give a rat's rear end how scratch-proof BDs are. I don't like anything touching the bottom of the discs.

The thing that irritates me most is when a big blue bar and BD logo ruins an otherwise great packaging. They should always make this removable. I hope they stop doing this once DVD has disappeared.
The same goes for ratings printed on the cover. Last edited by Nisei; 08-31-2012 at 05:41 PM. |

The UK ratings aren't stickers and out of the 9 steel books I own, not a single one is (for lack of a better word) stuck on. They're all on J-cards.
Packaging that annoys me most are those over-sized DVD slips that Australia uses for their Triple Play releases. ![]() |

I get annoyed at that, too.

I hate packages which have some design flaw that can ruin them over time.
You cited a DVD example (TMNT -- which by the way was 6 volumes, then seasons) so I have a couple as well... BLU - Wizard of Oz [UCE] - To display this, you are resting its entire weight on the bottom edge of its front flap, potentially putting constant, unnecessary stress on the spine hinge. Not good. DVD - Seinfeld Complete Series - The entire set of disc trays inside one of the "books" of discs sagged under its own weight while sitting on the shelf, causing the glue dots that attached it to the "book cover" to slip and slide to where it was almost completely separated. Fraggle Rock Complete Series (original release) - Aside from the original release's 3-ring binder of cardboard sleeves the discs were in (which scratched them all and forced a complete packaging redesign and full replacement program) ... it was also boxed in such a way that to display it properly, the clear plastic front panel would slowly pull itself away from the box under its own weight and fall out, which then means the 3-ring binder may follow. Evil Dead 1/2 "Book of the Dead" editions - The rubbery necronomicon book covers give off a god-awful stench, so bad that I wrapped them entirely in clear cling wrap to suppress the odor. It took me a long time to figure out why my movie room was starting to smell so bad. And now, the batteries in both have died with no way to replace them, so they shall scream no more. So much for the immortal dead. |

I really dislike the bilingual packaging that we have in Canada.

Agree with the cardboard packaging. The Alien collection and Star Wars collection cases stink. Zero stars. For ideas on how to improve, please see the extended edition LOTR packaging. I'm just sayin'...
It doesn't look like we need to worry about it anymore, but the old Bond collection cases were terrible. The "Binders" held their discs with glued-on foam discs. You'll never believe what happens to the foam discs once you've taken the disc off a couple times... ![]() |

You know...many (if not all) of those are designed so that you can unclip it, open the case, then firmly clip it down to the inside of the back half of the case, and now you never have to mess with it again. At least the latest ones Disney has been using are -- and interestingly, sometimes they come that way already.

As far as what I dislike, it has to be the amaray cases with big lettering saying it is a DVD + Blu-Ray (see Terminator - released 4/6/10). They have a DVD case look to them, and seem second rate. The almost look like they could be bootleg copies. |
