Default Sony Demos Copying From Blu-ray Disc

Sony Demos Copying From Blu-ray Disc

LAS VEGAS -- The concept of copying a lower-resolution version of a film from a packaged media disc to a portable device is not new--in fact, late last year, Fox and Warner released the first standard definition titles to offer this capability (on Live Free, Die Hard and Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix, respectively).

Sony today demonstrated the next level of disc copying. At the company's booth at CES, Sony demonstrated how you could put a Blu-ray Disc movie into a Playstation 3 and copy the film to a Playstation Portable or a Memory Stick. "This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you," explains David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

"There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You'll see that coming in the new year," Bishop added. In addition to the PSP copying example, Sony also demonstrated how you could download ring tones and new content to a BD Live player, using Men in Black as the example.

BD Live is proving to be a big catchphrase at the show: Panasonic announced its BD Live player yesterday, Fox showcased an early version of its Alien vs. Predator multiplayer game at the Blu-ray Disc Association's booth, and Sony showed its interactive Men in Black trivia game. The game was being played by two people in two locations on a Playstation 3.

My guess... either they would press different discs for rental that didn't have the PSP version on the disc, or they would encrypt the PSP version, and make you enter a key that's included on the inside of the box packaging.

I imagine that the copies use the internet connection to get authorization. Simple matter of denying authorization on rental movies. Now the "previously viewed" resells rental places have might be problematic.

Though I imagine they could be liberal and have a "grace" period of use once downloaded to the PSP and require a refreshing of the license... something you couldn't do on a rental.

I think you're right. Online license renewal is the key to this. Maybe a 24-48 hour renewal. SPHE will be the first studio to test this out. I'm sure other studios will be cautious about it.

If it takes off, everybody wins. The studios win because sales and rentals will increase. CEs win because they sell more hardware - players and portable players. Apple wins because there's iPod phones and Touch. Microsoft and Toshiba win because their Zune player... well I don't know about them.

Why bother with restriction? How many movies can you actually store on a PSP? Let's say one. Ok. You rent a disc, you copy to a PSP, and then what? The movie is restricted to the single PSP. It's a low res copy, so will look bad on a TV. And if you want to watch another movie on your PSP, you better dump the one you have on extended loan.

I love my PSP, but I don't know if I will use my PSP to do all the other stuff. I just want to play game, I don't really watch movies on PSP.
