Is it just me or does the silence from the hd-dvd promo group tell you that they are trying to figure out a way to get out of this battle gracefully? If they were planning to continue, don’t you think they would reassure all those people sitting on the fence that there was still a fence to sit on? I can only image that there are a ton of folks who have been dieing to get a hi-def player and are now on there way to best buy to do just that. If Toshiba was planning to continue one would think they would get the message out there sooner rather than later. I know they have made a press release regarding Warner and CES, but it didn’t contain any that would give there supporters hope.

We have to expect silence for a while till all interested parties can meet to discuss what to do next. I think there is a significant chance that they will decide there is no point throwing good money after bad and creating even more angry consumers with every player sold to a confused and ignorant buyer. I really do think Toshiba may do the decent thing and just end it all in the near future, releasing Paramount from their contractual obligations, with perhaps a phasing out of all HD DVD releases over the next 6 months, and an even earlier phasing out of player sales. They will perhaps release a dual format player in the future to ensure that people can always play their existing HD DVDs, even if their current player breaks down.

The silence means defeat and perhaps some moronic attempt at spinning the loss of a major contributor of the format's software sales into something of a defeat for blu-ray. Some idiots congregating in the arse end of the internet will eat it up.
If they keep going with HD-DVD, they're just going to end up in a deeper financial hole and more angry customers. It would be great to see how some retailers around the globe will react to this. If retailers drop HD-DVD, software and hardware can not be sold, forcing them to switch to blu-ray. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Last edited by Li'l Nicky; 01-05-2008 at 09:21 PM. |

Maybe they have been informed about another soon to be announced studio shift?
It was reported that Warner told them them about their decission on Thursday already. So if, for example, Universal has similar plans, they will know it now for sure. I think as they are mainly backed by Toshiba, which is an asian company, they are looking how to get out of this as fast as possible but without loosing face. Markus |

It tells me that they know the writing's on the wall. They lowered the price on their players so much, it was like they were practically giving them away; but blu-ray still outsold them. They thought that by buying off Paramount/DW, it would swing things in their favor, but it didn't quite go that way. Plus, the fact that Toshiba/MS has to know that Universal is going to go neutral eventually, probably sooner than Toshiba and Microsoft would like, they have to know that the format war is essentially over. So now, Toshiba has to be looking for a way to bow out and save face at the same time.

I'll make a prediction they wont crawl away. They will drop the players under a $100.00 and drop the format prices to under $20.00 in fact they might financially strangle themselves by trying to sale their players for even $50.00. They are going to try to under sale Bluray Toshiba is not going to give up not with MS backing them. Look for the remainder of 2008 as Toshibas last desperate attempt to save its format. Look at it this way when an animal is dying in a trap it eats its leg off. Toshiba will do the same.

The silence means they are implementing their secret HD-DVD has failed plan. Toshiba is not dumb they have plans for things like this in place. In a few months they will most likely reveal plans to show of a HD-DVD and Blu-Ray combo player. Microsoft will just stop producing the 360 add-on drive. Universal will go neutral sometime in 08. Paramount will either get out of their exclusive deal in mid 08 also or else just go Blu only in 09.

Reducing prices further simply makes it even more obvious the format is dead. Even HD-DVD owners with large collections are selling up, you'd have to be delusional to buy in now, unless you want an upscaling DVD player. |

The politics involved is just so moronic; what is the best sure fire way for these companies to make the most money from HD movies? All support one format making it easy for people to upgrade. It beggars belief that Toshiba would consider continuing this format war rather than accepting that blu is the preferred HD movie format and start making blu-ray players.
The sooner this ends, the sooner all companies involved can start cleaning up with HD movie and hardware sales. Once the public see one format to move up to, they will move. |

Well, if you really want to compare Toshiba/DUD to animals then I guess their silence can be taken as a sign of their impending death. Last I remember don't animals go somewhere quiet to spend their last few moments?
