Angry Smokin' Aces... Blu-ray release January 19, 2010

I was pumped the other day when I saw a TV commercial for Smokin' Aces and I know it was for the DVD release. I hadn't seen it in the theatre and was pumped that it would probably be released on BD - WRONG!

Smokin' Aces gets High Def treatment on January 19, 2010

Smokin' Aces Blu-ray Review

A devilishly divisive shoot-em-up reaps an impressive Blu-ray release...

Reviewed by Kenneth Brown, January 17, 2010

Cards on the table: despite its tonal inconsistencies and brash cast of crass, oft-times off-putting characters, I've grown rather fond of Smokin' Aces. It wasn't love at first sight, mind you, but a torrid affair that took me by complete surprise. A cinematic it just happened, baby moment if there ever was one. After falling for writer/director Joe Carnahan in the wake of Narc -- a critically acclaimed, slowburn stunner starring Ray Liotta and Jason Patrick -- I approached Smokin' Aces with high hopes. But as I sat in the theater watching its schizophrenic madness unfold, I began suspecting my affections were misplaced. By the time the credits rolled, I never wanted to see a Carnahan flick again. Flash forward three years, one unexpected late-night TV viewing, two subsequent rentals and, eventually, a hesitant DVD purchase. Before I knew what had happened, I found myself appreciating its finer qualities, its director's bizarre grindhouse sensibilities, and the purpose behind its fractured, nearly incomprehensible, multifaceted storylines. As much as I didn't want to admit it, I had fallen in love with an unlovable film. Read more

It says a lot about a studio that chooses to support an inferior format over a superior one like Blu-ray. Can you say BRIBED?

I've pretty much given up on buying regular DVDs. If it's not on Blu-Ray and I really want to see it, I'll just rent it instead.

Smokin' Aces is alright - the one I'm most pissed about is HOT FUZZ!!! I've seen it twice already and it's bloody brilliant -- looking forward to seeing it again this weekend.

It's scheduled to be released on DVD and, ugh, that other format, in July. Universal won't be format neutral by then, but one can hope.

Universal is a money making company, so in time they will realize their mistake and either go neutral or BD.

Yea, just watch Quentin Tarantino movies, this movie is the same thing w/ less plot. Also, I'm not racist or anything, but if I watch another movie where they have a black woman go on a rant about how women (or just black women) have to be strong because men are pigs, I'm walking out, getting in my car, and punching the script writer in the nuts (or ovaries). I don't care how bad that sounds, it's such an over-used stereotype, and it has NOTHING what-so-ever to do w/ the movie.

The only thing in this movie I liked was the elevator shootout. It was so simple, yet perfectly done. The lights go out and you just see them as the muzzle flashes come. I'm surprised I haven't seen something like that before, especially w/ the bird's-eye view.

Other than that, horrible movie, I thought.

My thoughts exactlty....the ending fizzled, and the ride there seemed like a cheap generic knockoff attempt to be Tarentino for the most part.

A Direct-To-DVD Prequel is in the works, so I'm guessing it will come out with that.

I dunno, I didn't like this movie too much, hopefully once it gets the blu-ray treatment I will come around.
