Default PCM Options - Please Help

Please Help. This question has been bothering me since I bought my Sony BDP S1. I have a Lexicon MC12. It does NOT have HDMI connections. I have run the 5.1 analog outs from the S1 to the Lexicon. My question is when I choose PCM audio out from the S1 do I lose the back channels in my setup? I mean the discrete rear surrounds. I know that the Lexicon will output sound to the backs but I have a hunch that it is the same information that is being routed to the side surrounds. I have a 7.1 system but only 5.1 analog inputs. I know when I listen via bitstreem and choose DD plus I get the EX rear surrounds. I'm not sure if i would still be getting that information when I use the 5.1 analog inputs. When I put a test disk in the S1 and choose to test sounds through the rear speakers, all 4 surrounds come on. I'm so confused by this. Any input would be appreciated.

unfortunately, Multichannel Analog is discrete and I do not believe any post processing will take place...but I could be wrong as I do not know the capabilities of your Lexicon.

The good news is though...You will get Lossless audio with the analog...and I believe the S1 can decode trueHD...so in essence you can utilize both Uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD tracks found on Bluray movies.

just be sure to output the S1 as Linear PCM.

My Anthem pre-pro will manufacture 7.1 from the 5.1 analog inputs but with a price, the signal goes through the digital domain to do this so there is an analog to digital and back to analog conversion that takes place and although the Anthem does this very well there seems to be a slight sound quality penalty.I suspect your Lexicon can also do this.It is worth a try as it apply bass management and room correction as well, as bluray players have poor bass management.

Yes, the Lexicon does offer this but I agree with you, there is a sound quality penalty. I wish the Lexicon had 7.1 inputs. Anyone else out there experiment with this type of conversion and what are your thoughts?
