Panasonic SW-5582 only burning at 1x?

Using Nero 7; current version... SW-5582 firmware BDB2. Nero claims it starts the burn process at 2x (and finishes at 2x, too) - but the process takes exactly 96 minutes; in other words, 1x. (on a 25gb BD-R or BD-RE).

Same results with Sony and TDK media.

Any idea on this? Wondering if maybe Nero is just not up to the task yet? The speed doesn't appear to be falling back...

I've seen the exact same thing with Nero 7, With the Pioneer BDR 101a's its even worse, I'm talking 3 hours... You should look into Sonic's Digital Media Data, I've been consistently seeing 45 minute burn times with both the Pioneer drives and the panasionics, the only thing is you can't burn more than one disc at a time, which for me is a huge drawback, but something I'm guessing isn't exactly a widespread need. The software also gives you a pretty accurate real time read out as far as MB's burned and current burn speeds. I'm guessing its going to be a couple more updates online till nero gets up to par, I can't tell you how frustrating it was to have the Pioneer drive and the TDK media and the only thing I could use them for was paper weights because nero sucks (kept getting "failed to start disc-at-once" errors before I downloaded the update online, like it really made a difference...)

I'd love to, but on their page, I can't even find a place to buy the thing ... Nothing on Sonic's page even mentions "Digital Media Data" - - there's Digital Media Studio, which I'm not sure even supports BD...

Its packaged under the title DigitalMedia Projects, and i think it might be under ROXIO not sonic (even though they're the same freakin company) It is the software being shipped with the Pioneer drives, in fact its the only software that will make their drives funciton properly, however from what I've seen, the panasonic are a much more solid device in the sense that it already (supposedly) supports the DL 50 giggers, as well as reads cd-roms and can even burn the cd-rs. Its a pretty simple software package and they don't have alot of funcitons you would think would be standard, I'm not sure if it even has verify functionality. It might not be out on the shelf yet either, I've been having trouble finding any software you can purchase that supports Blu-ray... very frustrating... stupid media war... if you still can't find it let me know and I'll do some poking around

Yeah, talked to Sonic/Roxio, (just try getting through to those guys without already owning a product...) apparently their "Digital Media Studio" doesn't support blu-ray yet and the "Digital Media Data" packaged with the BDR-101A isn't for public consumption.

I'd gladly pay them for this thing if it'd actually let me do 2x BD. Unfortunately the Panasonic isn't shipping with any software whatsoever.

(Honestly I'd just like to verify that it *IS* Nero, and not the hardware.)

Did you get any drivers with the Panasonic? If so those should allow you to perform burns simply with the drag-n-drop functionality of Windows Explorer, not the best way to do it but it works, the only thing I've found is you have to "format" the disc before it will actually perform the burn whether it be on a BD-r or -re.
Speaking about Sonic, I know just what you mean.... we've been trying to get an SDK from them for a month now, rediculous squared

Nope, OEM bare drive.... so I'm not sure... The thing definitely works in Nero, it's just slow...

Ya, thats exactly what I saw as well, I think nero just isnt up to speed yet, pardon the pun... Before their last software upgrade Nero 7 wouldnt even burn bd's i'd simple get a "failed to start disc at once" error without the drive even spinning up. I'm a bit unsure what to suggest at this moment, but I'll get back to you

says they got speeds of 44minutes for 22gb, no clue what software was used.
for the RE discs they too get the slower 1.5hours, and it seems they used packet-writing software that came with the drive for that... so maybe it just depends on the software

I figure it's gotta be the software. I think that Nero isn't "setting 2x mode" correctly; I've found no difference between BD and BD-RE on straight out burns from Nero...

I'd love to get my hands on DigitalMedia Data *somehow*, but I can't even find that with a willing wad of money in my hand when speaking to the company that produces it. (Sonic).

It's great when companies tell you they don't want you to buy their stuff. Kinda counterintuitive, but oh well, heh.

From what I've seen I'd have to agree that something is very fishy with the way that nero 7 burns discs, Until they correct the problems that are very prevalent with the blu-ray media I wouldn't recommend that anyone use it unless they have an entire afternoon to flush down the drain

Nero 7 Is pretty crap in general. It does horribly with audio cds as well.

I completely agree. I think its a matter of them waiting to see which format will become dominant before they pump alot of support and effort into either one, that way they don't lose a bunch of money in a format thats going tho be phased out in two years *cough* HD DVD's *cough* HD DVD's *cough*

Anyways another reason it may only be burning at 1x is because of the drivers for it needing to be optimized and or the burning software being used needing to be set up correctly.

I've been doing this for a while and have never seen a 'driver' for an optical drive, except for DVD-Ram writing - and that's not so much a 'driver' as an abstraction layer.

And, with Nero, sorry, there just ain't much "set up" to be had. It's really as simple as any given software sending it a 2X command, which the drive either accepts or rejects.

The 5582 appears to accept it, but write at a 1x data rate.

Of course there may be more to the 'handshake' than Nero is aware of, (Does BD set speed differently than simply reading the ATIP and saying yes or no?) so, I think that's more of Ahead's programmers' responsibility to "set up", and not mine.

well yeah i'm not saying you should set it up but that ahead should be doing that but apparently they are not. The other thing is most optical drives are actually requiring drivers.
