Good Stuff. I have been wondering when they will come out with a PC drive for Blue-Ray. I thought the Vaio's would come out first with it, but oh well as long as it comes out. Just want to know if your graphics card will be able to output the high def signal to a high def TV?

Final Thoughts: To sum it all up, this is what we would say: “As the first generation Blu-ray drive, the Panasonic SW-5582 is overall a very good multi burner that produced high quality burns on most quality media currently available.”

Update: New price: $850

Just used your link and it is now $825.00 (Aug 29, 06)
Hope it is not a mis-print, seems price is going down.
After reading about various BD writers, I'll go for the SW-5582, since it writes DL BD discs.

If it came in black I'd be very tempted. I wonder if the bezel mount is the same as other panasonics.

SATA would be nice too, though.

I believe the drive I have is the Panasonic SW-5582, but rebranded and sold by fastmac. Can anyone confirm this?

I attached a quasi high res photo of the drive installed in my external firewire case, notice the blue ray (looks purple in pic)?

Yes, the FastMac drive (and MANY other drives) are rebranded Panasonic drives. Panasonic never released this drive (or their new 4x drive) to the retail channel. They just make the OEM drives and allow others to brand them, or sell them to large system makers.

No problem. BTW, if you ever do a firmware update, be sure to get it from FastMac. Panasonic isn't releasing updates to the public (as they never released a retail version of the drive) but some "generic" have made their way to the net. You want to stick with the one's officially released by FastMac to avoid potential major problems, however.

Take care.

They did in Japan. It was sold as the LF-MB121JD.

I can't seem to find a SATA -> firewire external 5 1/2" enclosure ANYwhere on the internet. Can you tell me the model of this and where you purchased it?

Thanks.
